I remember seeing a sight I had never thought possible in Martin Grammatica wearing a Saints uniform last season at the end. Why? Because after Dallas cut him and he seemingly fell off the map, I never thought I would see him doing his antics and post kick celebrations and his passion for the game. Not downing Olindo Mare at all because he is a good kicker, but Grammatica is special IMO. He is the proverbial underdog who over came a lot to make it to the NFL and succeed with a SB winning team.
but that isn't all to me.

I think after all these years he is trying to prove himself again in the NFL, to himself and to the NFL teams that think he is over the hill or overrated to begin with.
I think he would perfect as a Saint and I want him to stay here and I think somewhere in SP's mind he knows Martin is a much better kicker ands more suited to this team. Sure he does not have the TB ability Mare has but man he make up for it in other ways. He is a clutch kicker who still has the leg power we need and he did a damn good job for us those last three games. He looked like the guy we expected Mare to be.

If the Saints know what their doing, they will keep Grammatica. something tells me that if we do, we will have a huge upside and benefit from it like John Carney did in his career after leaving San Diego and in coming here.

bottom line we cannot let this guy get away. He brings more to the table which means he is much better player for this team then what we had before

Mare was really starting to come on before he was hurt. I'd like to see them duke it out in camp and let the best kicker stay. I hope Mare can resolve his issues not just because of the touch backs, but also because of the longer range on field goals.

Mare started kicking better before he got hurt.
Let them duke it out and let the best Kicker stay.

Kickers go through streaks and slumps. You have a couple exceptional kickers in the league who are more clutch than the rest, but there arent many of them.

Fans tend to rate kickers by their last few kicks. I expect most on here will want Grammatica and not Mare because Grammatica hit some nice kicks at the end of the season.

Of course the reason Grammatica was available was his inconsistency in the first place. Over the course of a season he will likely revert to his historical percentages, as will Mare.

I dont see a lot of difference between these kickers. Both have good range and both can be streaky. I agree to let them fight it out in camp and see who wins. I doubt one will clearly outkick the other, you never know. One might pull a hammy in camp and have that decide the battle.

The mistake is to automically assume Grammatica is better because he got hot for a month and because Mare struggled early on.

hell keep em both. If one is struggling bring in the other. It would be good competition through the whole season.

Can we keep both? Grammatica for clutch kicks & Mare for touchbacks & exceptionally long field goals.

If we have the roster space keep both. If it comes down to two of them or one and a young player with potential, keep Automatica.

We worked very efficiently with Billy Cundiff and John Carney. Mare and Gramatica are nearly the same as those two. Ideally, either Mare could step up in terms of consistency and accuracy, or Martin could come back with a stronger leg, one could step up and earn all 3 jobs of short-mid range FG kicker, long range FG kicker, and kickoff specialist.

This is the response I was predicting in my earlier post, meaning no offense to you Irish Saint.

People will assume on the basis of his last few kicks that Gramattica is an accurate clutch kicker while Mare is not.

Gramattica got cut from Tampa Bay because he was horrible his last couple of seasons. he is a career 77% field goal kicker. Mare is a career almost 80% field goal kicker.

Because Gramattica hit a few kicks in a row suddenly he is the clutch kicker? I am not for keeping one over the other, I would just be careful judging these two guys off of last season.

Like all kickers, both have had slumps. Gramattica's slumps have been worse, so bad he couldnt find a job for a while. Cut Mare today and he has a job somewhere tomorrow.

Yes, if you mean keep both through camp. But keep both during the season? I dont think so. I just dont see giving up a roster spot to keep two kickers. The only time that remotely makes sense is when you have one kicker who is extremely reliable on short kicks but cannot kick deep and another kicker who can bomb them deep but is unreliable on short kicks.

Thats not the case here. If anything, Mare has been more reliable over his career.

It seems like Gramatica is older than 32. He did have a great stint with us. That 55 yarder against the Eagles could have been at least a 60 yarder. St. Dude makes a lot of sense about their career averages, but even though Mare was coming around before the injury, he still makes me very nervous when he lines up for a field goal.

Grammatica is not that old, and his leg is not weak by any means. Not quite as strong as Mare's, but close.

While this may be true to an extent, how many kickers keep their jobs after kicking 10 for 17?

Not many. His last two years in the league Gramattica was 11-19 and 16-26. Thats why he lost his job. Tampa gave him an extra year after the 16-26 season and he responded by doing worse. Then he got cut by Dalls after that, I think.

I am not saying take one over the other, I am just saying the fact Gramattica strung a few kicks together doesnt automatically make him a better kicker than Mare.

I would bet you this. Put both kickers on the open mkt and Mare gets more calls.

Kicking that ball in Chicago must have felt like kicking a brick. He's 2 years younger than Mare. If we can't keep both of them I hope Martin' is the guy.
