If you could have 2006 Brees or 2006 Payton who would you pick ? (1 Viewer)

Brees’ best season before Payton was 3576 yards, under Payton he never had less than that until 2019 and 2020.

In the four years before Payton, he averaged 213 yards and 1.4 TD’s per game started. In the four years after, he averaged 290 yards and 1.9 TD’s.

For the rest of his career, he was even better, averaging 301 yards and 2.2 TD’s per game.

A second round QB with middle of the road results (that had almost no FA interest) suddenly became elite without having elite receiving weapons around him. And Payton gets zero credit?
Brees was off the charts talented - esp in his workout habits and "what's between his ears".

He just needed a system that allowed him to shine.

No doubt SP was the wizard that let Drew do just that. (And, of course, Pass, Pass, Pass helps with the accumulation of lots of pass yards.)

Again, what other QB has rose to prominence because of SP's tutelage.

SP sure has had his share of QB's that he brought in, but not one rose "to the top" during that tutelage.

Definitely Drew, Payton was a really good coach but I think Drew made him rather than the other way around. Payton had to have a quarterback with smarts capable of executing his offense.

Brees,

There's a lot more evidence out there of QBs making coaches than the other way around.

Payton. He took a Kerry Collins who was horrible in 98 with N.O to a Superbowl with the Giants in 00

Absolutely Brees… his legacy is one that will always endure as a Hall of Fsme QB as well as his commitment to our community.

Is the question who we would take today or who would we take in 2006? If 2006, Brees is definitely a 20/20 hindsight pick coming off a major surgery without putting up big numbers before. Carr put up better numbers, and some of the same people who say they would take Brees are saying no way to Carr.
Payton is a hindsight pick as well because his past jobs were kind of sketchy as far as success went

Throwing out Brees's first year in SD (because he didn't really play):

Years 2-3
Average TDs/INTs: 14/15.5
Average yards: 2696
Average completion %: 59.2

Years: 4-5
Average TDs/INTs: 25.5/11
Average yards: 3367
Average completion %: 65

People like to forget that Brees was a rookie in San Diego and it did take him a few years to figure it out. There is a noticeable difference his last 2 seasons there and he was already on his way, despite his horrible head coach at the time.

When people act like Brees did absolutely nothing before Payton it makes me laugh and honestly discounts the hard work and effort that Brees put in way before he became a Saint. Brees gradually got better and better in SD and who knows what he would've done. But at this point we know a little what Brees could do without Payton...we don't have a full season context to know what Payton can do without Brees yet.

Payton because by the time Mahomes came around he would've been our pick 😂
