If you wake up a student who is sleeping in class, you can expect to get sued... (1 Viewer)

I had a teacher who kept a spray bottle full of water that they would use to wake sleeping students.

I had a teacher throw a chalk eraser at me once, had to walk around with an eraser print on my black shirt all day.

Had another teacher that would take off her shoe and bang it on your desk.

If his head was laying on the desk with his ear against it probably not very hard.

That's what I was thinking. If the ear was pressed firmly against the desk, then the vibrations could have been more intense having reached the ear through the solid desk. Though I can't say I'm really an expert on the acoustical conductivity (I just made that up) of what's likely to be some type of particle board.

While I don't really have a problem with either of these methods, if students sleeping in class is enough of an issue that they have to have these devices at the ready, it's possible that they need to reevaluate their teaching style/methods.

not really....ever smoked a fat one right before class? no way you stay awake, and I didnt care if it was "Drunk driving consequences film day"....From personal experience it was more my fault than anyone else.

on to the slap on the desk....I just did in in my office and while my ear rang for all of 5 sec after hitting the desk about as hard as i could, I just dont see that kind of damage resulting from a slap on a desk top. Could the loud music in his room, car and other places have contributed to a "weak" ear drum? If so, shouldnt that be documented by his physician and everyone told about his condition? hmmmmmm......

Who sleeps with their ear pressed firmly against the desk? Nobody. Go pull up a chair to your desk or table at home and try it right now.

My high school english teacher kept a Nerf football handy for such occassions. Her aim incredible, too.

My high school algebra teacher used erasers - thus marking the student for the rest of the day. :9:

In the event that didn't work, he also had a hockey stick with the blade cut off. That made quite an impression when slammed up against the under side of the desk. :worthy:

Yes, but lunch and a seat next to a sunny window always made me more sleepy than that ever did.

I had a French teacher in grade school that fit every stereotype of chalk-throwing French teachers that I ever heard of. She wouldn't wait for you to fall asleep - you only had to look away for a second and you became a target. Dead-eye aim, too. She would be mad if she missed.

Heck I can't claim to know, but I'm just trying to imagine that being permanently damaging.

When I was kid, a firecracker that I had stuffed in a plastic army jeep and was about to throw, went off in my hand, within an arm's length of my ear. Once the ringing stopped, I seemed to be fine, sans a stinging burn on my hand. All subsequent annual hearing tests that we were required to take at school revealed no loss. But it could be that I was just very fortunate...

Okay, so maybe this kid really did suffer permanent damage from a teacher striking his desk. And maybe the teacher overreacted. But with all the sounds and vibrations the average person is exposed to, it's hard for me to comprehend. But hey, if it's a fact the teacher's actions caused the kid to suffer hearing loss, I hope it gets worked-out fairly in court.

your desk is probably pretty firm compared to a school desk. Your ear was probably not air tight to the desk either.

I have slept in class PLENTY and never fell asleep with my ear suctioned to the desk. My arms were always underneath my head with my book standing up in front as a barricade from sight and spit balls.

Now if this fool actually fell asleep on his desk with his ear pasted directly to the desktop, he was a rookie.

I think density of the desk would be more of a factor in how well it transmitted sound than firmness.

Vinicios Robacher's father, Soel Robacher, claims that his sleepy son's left ear was resting on his desk on Dec. 4 when math teacher Melissa Nadeau slammed her hand down so hard that his eardrum burst. Robacher says his son experienced an almost complete loss of hearing.

Since then, though some of his hearing has been restored, the boy has been through extensive medical treatments with ear, nose and throat specialists and could require surgery to fully rectify the damage, according to documents obtained by FOXNews.com.

Who knows.. if they have physical proof of the damage I'm sure they'll make some good money.

The disciplinarian at one school I went to school would roam the halls, if he caught someone sleeping he's kick the underside of the desk. Unless of course it was right before lunch, then he'd instruct everyone to leave quietly when the class was over and for no one to wake the sleeper. Chances were they missed the serving time in the caf and went hungry for the rest of the day, even if they didn't miss all of their lunch period.
