call during this past weekend's game on NFL Fieldpass, and they are starting to make me mad. After the Mike McKenzie interception and fumble that turned out to be a down by contact call, they said referee Mike Carey's reversal was unbelievably bad call that was only made because the officials have it out for the Niners this year. They said this even after admitting that Alex Smith did in fact touch McKenzie's leg on the play. Their logic: yes, McKenzie was touched, but the DB took several more steps before falling and there was no reason to believe the touch caused him to fall. I'm so glad we have Jim and Hokie calling games for us instead of some of these jerks.

think of it like this, if you were a niners fan, you would agree with them

I listened to the niners color guy before the game, and he was an unbelievable homer...after his interview, my wife (a football rookie) asked if the niners were the best team in the league...

On most occasions I would, Antipop, but that is the most inexplicable reasoning I've ever heard on a broadcast. So by their logic, if you hit a guy's leg and he takes some steps before falling, that's not down by contact.

Um...Id would venture a guess that every single radio color analyst in the NFL is a "homer"...all you have to do is watch the hilites with the radio calls underneath...theres a lot of yelling in the background...and it aint the play by play guy yelling.

Reminds me of the kick off return for a touchdown by Lamar Smith (?) many years ago. That was in our favor and the refs at the time agree with the above logic.

you can be a "homer" and still be a good color analyst. Hokie will give credit when credit is due to his team, but he also isnt afraid to call the Saints out when they are doing horribly. Ive also listened to many WWL broadcasts and I've never heard him say the Refs have it out for the Saints.

I agree Hburg. Every local broadcast team is extremely biased toward their team but the really good ones, and I think the Bucs announcers are pretty fair as well, don't make idiotic comments that don't stand up to any reason. And come on, how can anyone look at that play and not see that McKenzie fell because of Smith's contact?

exactly. would Hokie or Henderson cry about a correct call that went against the saints? nosiree

Not surprising that 'local' broadcasters see the game that way.

The irony is that if McKenzie had not fumbled the ball, those same announcers would have been screaming that Smith had 'tackled' him.

I live in the SF Bay area and even he local talk show hosts were claiming conspiracy on all the calls. However, one of the sports writers for te 49ers that was on the phone at the time, called them out. He stated that they obviously had never seen a Saints game because they are the ones that never get the calls. He went on to shoot down all their "shoulda been" complaints about the refs and so on. He even asked them if they were now Raiders fans because thats what their fans do, complain. Even though the guy completely shot them down (and he's a pro-49ers guy), they pretty much just ignored him and kept spouting out conspiracy theory stuff.

I cannot imagine ANYONE with any knowledge of football would believe that a player stumbling for 2 steps after being him in the legs and falling to the ground was in no way related to being hit in the legs.

Actually, there was a play where Smith was outside of the tackle and threw it away. Fans started to boo, and Hokie said something like, "That was a good call, Smith was absolutely, positively outside of the tackle. No grounding on that play." He didn't try to make it look like the refs are out to get us. Henderson has always been like that. He'll call a bad call a bad call, but he'll also call a good call (that goes against us) a good call.
