Importance of drafting good WRs.... (1 Viewer)

Only 32 guys are drafted in the 1st round each year. How many guys are either not draft in the first round or are UDFAs? Your point is stupid because it's not putting statistics into consideration. The same argument can be said of any position. But if you go on a round by round basis...a 1st rounder has a better chance of being great than a 2nd rounder. So...no you shouldn't be trying to trade your first rounder for a 6th rounder because that's where Antonio Brown was drafted.

2-4? 2014 - 5 were selected. 2015 - 6 were selected. 2016 - 4 were selected (on the high end of your curious scale). Success ratio is about 50%....Yes, you can get good edge rushers later in the draft but IMO the margins are thinner...the likelihood of doing so is less than with WR's....

...and 2010 was 2, 2011 was 3, 2012 was 4, 2013 was 3

The number was more of an approximation but the point remains that even if you go on the extreme high end and say they make up 10-15% of the receivers entering the NFL each year they still make up a much larger percentage of the top receivers in the league.

Also you say the premier edge rusher margins are better but even though more passrushers are taken in the 1st round each year than WR's only

2 of the top 5 in sacks were drafted in the first round

8 of the top 15 in sacks were drafted in the first round

So again your odds of getting a good player are best in the first round. Thus 1st round picks are the best place to grab a 1st round graded player that fills a long term, schematically important positional need regardless of position. Its never your only shot but its your best shot at solidifying a position for years to come.

To your last paragraph, not arguing that at all, of course that is true. IMO WR, is the not as valuable as a true cover corner, impact speed rusher or dominant offensive lineman. We have had good/great ones for years but have managed only one SB...the best Saints WR ever was a 7th round pick. I guess what I'm trying to say is that unless WR is by far the BPA in the late 1st round (and a glaring need) I would always take the best Offensive lineman or defender...

another point of note, how many of those 1st rounders was considered really good in their 1st year production..
C. Johnson, randy Moss, OBJ, Mike Evans,
most of those highly productive late round /udfa took a few years to even break starting roster.
