Can you predict or gain insight on the outcome of the upcoming game by looking at the body of work of each team this season?
With all the media outlets tossing out the fact The #1 Defense will be facing off against The #1 Offense, it got me to looking inside the numbers. Did you know that the Bears defense gives up 294.1yds/gm? The Saints 307.3yds/gm. That's not much of an edge, 13.2yds/gm. Seems pretty even to me, but then I went to look at points. How many points per game do these defenses give up. The Bears must have a huge advantage right? Wrong. Not if you think 4.2pts/gm is a huge difference. The Bears give up 15.9pts/gm compared to the Saints 20.1pts/gm. I would have thought that the much heralded and vaunted Bears D would have a bigger advantage. Sacks were very close as well, Bears 40 and Saints 38. The one HUGE stat that the Bears do have an advantage is in takeaways. The Bears 44 and the Saints only 19. However, the Bears offense turns it over nearly as much with 36. Saints only 23. This obviously stands out enough to say that if the Saints play error free ball on offense, they can have a chance of winning the turnover battle and winning the game.
The Saints offense averages 391.5yds/gm compared to the Bears 324.9yds/gm. Advantage Saints. The points per game are nearly dead even with Bears 26.7pts/gm versus Saints 25.8pts/gm. However, the Bears played an easier schedule, which contributed to these numbers.
I don't know if you can predict the games' outcome from these stats, but it does give me more confidence in our team....if there was room for anymore.
