I have Windows XP pro sp2. i recently accidentally installed some linux drivers on windows and almost killed the computer(was able to fix the drivers though). would i have to wipe clean the hard drive before i can install kubuntu for a dual boot? i'm not very familiar with partitions and don't want to go and kill windows again.

You can either re-partition your HD with someing like Partition Magic and not lose your xp or add a second drive. It's sometimes better to have xp loaded first because Kubuntu will load a program called Grub, which is a boot menu and let you select which OS you want to boot to. Grub will automatically configure itself with xp as an option if it sees it.

I've successfully used GParted to resize an XP partition, but because this disk was using NTFS there was a few hoops I had to jump through when doing it (about two years ago).

When I'm faced with these situations I just reinstall Windows FIRST and use the Windows XP installer to only use that portion of the HD I want to dedicate to Windows.

Then after XP is installed *Buntu will detect the existing installation and honor its presence by placing a boot entry for it in GRUB's configuration file, allowing you a clean dual-boot scenario.

Were you trying to use the EXT2/3 drivers on Windows? I had those lock up an XP box for me recently.

If you don't want to reinstall Windows, which is understandable, go ahead and defrag it. Next, download & burn the GPartED LiveCD. http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php

And follow this: http://gparted.sourceforge.net/larry/resize/resizing.htm
