When Brees took the intentional safety from the 1 yard line, he ran around the endzone and while he was still in the endzone, he threw the ball out of the side of the endzone. As a result, he grounded the ball out of the endzone, and the ref immediately signaled safety. Why did Philly not decline the penalty and take the ball at the Saints 1? Shouldn't this have been an imcompletion with a grounding penalty that Philly had the opportunity to decline?

Just a question. I definitely think it was the right offensive strategy.

He threw it backwards out of the endzone, thus making it a lateral and a fumble. Fumble out of the endzone = safety. No penalty.

Wonder why he doesnt just run out in those cases just to avoid the refs trying to call it a forward pass (even though it wasnt even close, but you never know with the zebras).

Any time you throw the ball behind or to the side its a laterall not an incomplete pass.

Good point, maybe he is afraid he will trip and fumble the ball.

Because a safety is not a penalty. You can't decline a safety.

If the safety is caused by grounding, you can decline the grounding penalty and there is no safety.

In this case, he apparently did not throw the ball forward, so it was a lateral rather than a forward pass.

By the way, that was an extremely smart call by Payton taking the timeout to do that.

All these questions! :hihi:

There's probably 100 different ways to take a safety in that situation. My guess is that Drew helped make the decision and just did what came naturally to him.
