Here the report from PFT:

"Per a league source, the new labor deal would wipe out the current formula for determining the amount of the fifth-year option, replacing it with a formula premised on performance or playing time.
Under the revised approach, which would apply to the 2018 draft class, a player’s position would take precedence over draft slot. For any player who qualifies for two Pro Bowls in his first three years, the fifth-year option becomes the franchise tag amount. For any player who qualifies for one Pro Bowl, the fifth-year option becomes the transition tag amount.
For a player who has 75 percent cumulative playing time or who reaches the 75-percent threshold in two of three seasons, or for a player who has at least 50 percent playing time in all three years, the fifth-year salary becomes the average of the third- through 20th-highest-paid players at his position.
For all other players, the fifth-year option becomes the average of the third- through 25th-highest-paid players at his position."

Players who perform better than their (draft) expectations will get paid on the fifth year. Teams that draft well will have some complications on their cap considerations for the future. I guess they will start planning based on max figures for players the become starters soon.

Plus the increase in minimum salaries coming in, seems like the vets feel the shift in how soon the young guys can get to the cheese. Cuts more off the top and also promotes free agency when teams dont want to pay the increased 5th yr $$.

Don't like that it's determined off a glorified popularity contest. And is it the first group of players voted to the Pro Bowl or the 4th and 5th place players after Super Bowl players and drop outs are accounted for?

If they do this the fan vote needs to be removed.

Excellent point. Would the verbiage say VOTED to the Pro Bowl or NAMED to the Pro Bowl after the dropouts? First choice or fourth or fifth alternate?

He was in the 2017 draft class, though, not the '18.
And only applies for 1st round rookies that have 5th year options. Which kind of devalues the 5th year and makes it scary to have multiple 1st round picks be great. You'll be forced to extend them after their 4th year due to cap hit of the 5th year.

This new CBA is great for the young players and the guys that are on minimum deals..

The only ones I see complaining about it are the highest earners

I think they'd be better off by exempting quarterbacks with tenure from the cap and maybe only counting a fraction of vested vet salaries against the cap so teams aren't forced to get rid of their older stars.

Also, the minimum salaries should have risen last time with the cap on 1st rounders.

That sounds more complicated than my town's crooked books! What about the players who could excel, but are in bottom dwelling teams? What about the players that have partially met the goals, but get hurt and miss the test of the year? What about players, say like Aaron Rogers or Teddy Bridgewater who have to sit out, but could obviously meet the criteria if they could play?

I don't like this proposal at all. It is so slanted and punishes players for things beyond their control. Either make it much fairer, leave it as is, or do away with it entirely.

Bingo

The pro bowl should be voted on by the Players and Coaches. POINT BLANK PERIOD.

To many younger guys get shafted (especially O-Lineman), and some vets get in their while they dont deserve it

Let's face it, the casual fan (which makes up majority of the vote) does not know how to determine good offensive line play or even ST sometimes.

Decent players on Big Market Teams would get rewarded, while Great players on small market teams could get shafted

They gotta figure that out, because it's been messed up for a long time
