Packers Week 1 Film Study: Breaking down defensive woes against Saints

Green Bay’s defense had no answer for the Saints on Sunday. What went wrong?

The Green Bay Packers couldn’t do anything to stop the New Orleans Saints in Week 1, and the poor effort defensively was a big reason for the blowout loss.

After an offseason of speculation and drama, the Packers came out flat on both sides of the ball on Sunday, losing 38-3 in one of the more embarrassing losses in recent memory. Aaron Rodgers looked hesitant, the running game was nonexistent, and defense had no answers to slow down Jameis Winston or stop the run.

Winston finished the game attempting only 20 passes, but completed 14 of them for 148 yards and five touchdowns. The former No. 1 overall pick didn’t have to air it out much simply because the running game was so effective, with the Saints rushing for 171 yards on 39 attempts.

New defensive coordinator Joe Barry looked completely outmatched. Saints head coach Sean Payton seemed to have an answer for anything Barry threw out there, but the film also showed that the Packers simply weren’t able to step up against their opponent.

Great read, almost exclusively about the Pack D. King may as well have been on the sideline for that Harris TD. If the rookie isn’t ready to do better than that, then they should have looked elsewhere with their first rounder. We got a good rookie CB and he wasn’t a first 😍
The difference between good scouting and bad scouting. We have improved in that dept vastly over the years. With the combination of Loomis, Payton, and Ireland, we have the best triumverate in the league, with the exception of, MAYBE, the Patriots.

You know what’s crazy? Patriots hadn’t drafted a pro bowler since 2013 before their PUNTER made it last year.

Stokes probably would have done better tbh. He's got elite speed to keep up with guys like Harris. I wouldn't be surprised to see him take over King's spot after a few games. He probably should have been a 2nd rounder, but it's not uncommon at all for even 1st round rookie CBs to take a bit to get into the starting lineup. He probably took a few rookie lumps during TC and preseason so the coaches couldn't confidently say he earned the job over the vet. Adebo had a good performance, and looks to be a good pick going forward, but there's no telling how he would have done on a play like that either. There aren't many good DBs that can keep up with Harris, especially on a play action bootleg, late game in a blowout loss, when you're expecting the O to just run the clock out.

No doubt. I was mostly commenting on King. They went on and on about his inability to track the ball but forget the ball, he wasn’t in the same zip code as his receiver. I know the coverage was for him to get help of Harris went inside but he was never in position at all to recover.
