No, you don't. You're right. If he's so terrible he should be cut.

It's just that he's not, so he won't.

Basically...Roman is probably a top 10 SS....of the CLASSIC sorts. Not really a good cover guy but can come up and support the run.

The only issue is hes being payed like a Top 3 SAFETY (FS or SS)

I want to say we can run a 335 nickel like we did with him during the 3G days but i think the 2-4-5 is Ryans nickel of choice.

Obviously this is a Roman thread, but can't believe people continue to bring up Patrick Robinson's name. It's massively overblown on SR how bad Patrick Robinson is.

Not saying he's great, but he's far better than most on here give him credit for. Sure he gave up a lot of yards and a lot of touchdowns, but he also gets his hands on a lot of balls.

And you can make the argument that he has a much tougher job than most CBs, since he generally shades the opponent's best WR across the field like Vincent Jackson, Dez Bryant, and Julio Jones. Not many corners are asked to do that. Greer isn't. Richard Sherman plays almost exclusively LCB. Nnamdi? he played exclusively at RCB in Oakland. Johnathan Joseph also plays nearly all of his snaps on the left side (this year he was asked to move around more, and while injured, not coincidentally he didn't play as well).

So factor that role in, along with 1) a sub-par pass rush, 2) poor safety play behind him, 3) adjusting to Spag's scheme, and Robinson's numbers - which are already overblown - don't look nearly as bad.

And it's not like Robinson's been terrible since he entered the league. He was the best CB on the team in 2011, and if you trust PFF, the 19th best CB in the league.

All of that being said, it would be a huge mistake to cut him. Not just because of the fact that he's not nearly as bad as SR makes him out to be (even in 2012), but also because he's young and cheap. Sure, he needs to be more consistent, but who on the defense doesn't? IMO he's flashed more than someone like Malcolm Jenkins to this point and people aren't calling for his head. And if Robinson can't put it together more consistently the next two years, just don't give him an extension. But you don't cut ties with a young, high upside guy on a relatively cheap deal.

Back to Nnamdi for a second... people are excited about signing him but he was worse than Robinson the past two seasons. And he's getting old. And he offers zero scheme versatility. Makes no sense. (I actually wouldn't mind bringing him in, but would think long and hard before giving him more than a 1-yr deal to see if he can regain some of his old form back in Ryan's scheme).

It would actually cost us money to get rid of Patrick Robinson, and he's pretty cheap.

Patrick Robinson is about to have his break-out year. He may start slowly this season cause it's clear that he doesn't pick-up a new defensive scheme quickly. With the additional CB talent this year, Ryan will able to use Robinson in his areas of strength.

Nothing much else to say after that.

The only person who I think could try to trade for Harper is of course GGG. Does anyone know what's the safety situation in Tennessee?

Dont be so sure about that. Robinsons size will hinder him well in press coverage. At nickel that won't be much of an issue as the nickel normally plays with a 5 yard cushion. But if he takes over the outside due to an injury, I'd be surprised if he didnt struggle in a big way.

There's plenty to say. Gotta put it in context. PRob covered the opponent's number 1s moreso than most CBs in the league. Bad pass-rush --> PRob has to cover longer than many. Not all of those yards/TDs were in 1-on-1 man coverage; some blame has to go to zones and bad safety play. Those factors make the numbers look worse than Robinson's actual play would indicate.

Again, the guy isn't great and clearly had a down year, but many of the posters on SR continually make him out to be Jason David/Fred Thomas (later years)/Corey White/Johnny Patrick bad, when he's not even close. When he plays well, he's a legit number 1. Just needs to be more consistent.

Trading Harper to clear space isn't an option. If we need substantial savings this year, the only move is for us to release him and designate him as June 1st cut.
