Is Brees Capable of One More High-Level Season? (2 Viewers)

Drew retired Drew, with playoff performances and this one was the worst....with Brady throwing darts downfield in his house.

Sorry, Drew never was that guy in the playoffs. We caught lightning one year...better known as Tracy Porter in the CG and SB, but I am so glad we done with this BS.

Drew retired Drew.
BS is right.

Drew was already “old” in this latest run of playoff futility and there was plenty of fail to go around. But already in ‘17 the long ball was fading. Payton has been papering over it.

Anyway, he was only the Super Bowl MVP. That was not “lightening in a bottle”. He wasn’t the weak link in the post season before this ‘era’ when we have a good enough defense.

So predictable that you would come to dance on his grave.

Is the team capable?

Loomis is a cap genius but finding $100m is a tough ask when you need a franchise QB.

I believe he is capable of having one more season similar to this one. The dink and dunk is fine when it works. Problem is, when you need him to sling the ball in the playoffs, he’s no longer capable, and that’s the big hump we haven’t been able to get over.

this. And Payton’s playbook never changes to accommodate anybody.

it hurts to see Brees end things this way but it would hurt worse to see him try to come back for another year. How many ribs does he have left?

If you want another regular season trophy, yes. Lombardi? No. The Bucs put 10 on the line and kept one safety intermediate. That tells you the whole story in one sentence.
They did but that isn’t what beat us. The turnovers did. A Cook fumble and Cook bounce off his arms caused another INT. We had these guys on the ropes and turnovers killed it. But turnovers always do. And yes, there were two INTs that were not good. I’m not saying he isn’t done, but the loss isn’t on Drew because he is done. Speaking this game alone, we had them on the ropes. Unfortunate but couldn’t close it out.

Have a group chat for with a bunch of friends, and one of them said this game reminded him of Manning in his last year. That kinda bothered me since I remember just how awful Manning was that final year. That said, he did just enough in the playoffs to allow their running game and D to win the SB.

It seems everywhere you go the discussions are that Drew doesn't have it anymore. The media, NFL fans and Saint fans all seem to agree on that. But what's interesting is that statistically (at least in the regular season), Brees hasn't had the drop off that QBs like Farve and Manning did in their final years.

Peyton Manning's last two seasons:
2014: 39 TDs / 15 INTs
2015: 9 TDs / 17 INTs

Brett Farve's last two seasons:
2009: 33 TDs / 7 INTs
2010: 11 TDs / 19 INTs

Drew's last three seasons:

Compared to Manning and Farve, Brees has held up a lot better. In fact, Brees' TD/INT ratio is a lot better now than it was in his prime. I guess my question is (genuinely curious), what do you guys think is the reason that Drew's had the troubles he's had in the playoffs lately? Why does he seem to be able to do well enough during the season but look so poor in the playoffs? I get if he can't quite make the throws he used to. But he's proven he can play it smart in the season. Just not sure why he can't in the playoffs.
Just let him go bro.

It is a team sport.

Most years Brees pulled way more than his weight and in some years he alone kept the team from being a bottom dweller. Particulary 2015-16.

His velocity and skills have been diminishing since 2nd half of 2017 when it was “but the receivers can’t get open” and everyone thought a healthy Keith Kirkwood was going to mean Super Bowl.

Lately we improved on defense, the OL and running game with Kamara and Ingram for a while. Those things helped mask Drew’s decline. But it was obvious.

It is just at the point we are not good or consistent enough in those other phases of the team to carry a 42 year old game managing QB. He’s super smart and would still be the best game manager out there but in the playoffs he can’t attack the defense and we cant dominate other phases.

It’s sad it had to end that way, but that is what it is. Going forward Payton needs to coach like he did with Teddy Bridgewater and learn to love scheming the run game for matchup success as much as he does his pass packages. Dunno how much an old dog can learn new tricks.

That said, I’m still shaking my head with Jared Cook. He has been a turnover or disaster waiting to happen all season and I don’t know why they didn’t phase him out because you knew this was coming.

Nah Brees is done. I enjoyed his last ride like i said I would win lose or draw this season. He's a good dude. If you never got/read his book I suggest getting a copy.

Reason I say it's a wrap...I don't see his body holding up for an entire season ever again. Team was built around him and his declined areas mentioned hundreds of times...Sean, Loomis and the team tried...it's time for a new era.

I'm good.

We all know What Drew’s meant to all Saint Fans and will never forget it!! My question does the team think it’s time for a New QB. Making the playoffs 4 years in a row is not easy. .SP and Staff have done their Job including the Draft, They’ve built Top 5 O-Line , Top 5 RB, Top 5 Defense , . Saints FO need to move on from Drew!! the team is young everywhere but QB. #JMO

He killed himself. I didnt do it...keep perspective. We just here to discuss it.

Sean definitely gets the blame, because he knew. He covered the limitations instead of upgrading.

You despise this team. You only ever have awful things to say. Why are you here? Why were you even unbanned? You bring the entire discourse down. You are a net negative to any conversation you are involved in.

Please.

There is a lot to it that goes beyond Brees. You are so biased and have an axe to grind.

100% he is old and could t get it done this year. You waited long enough for your “I told you so” and he had to get to 42 years old to give you your moment to crow. Congrats.

The overall level of unique futility and finding ways to lose in the playoffs is not Brees. The forces under that remain and are things that will probably impact Jamie’s Winston too, but then you will turn into an excuse maker.
