Is it possible for a Will Smith trade? (1 Viewer)

I say we wait to see what Ogeron can do before we get rid of guys.

The new coach likes slim trim and fast guys on the line. Will Smith is neither. Pure speculation on my part but I woudn't at all be surprised by a trade of Will Smith.

it would sure be a mistake in my humble opinion to trade Will Smith...but the Saints did trade Darren Howard when he was our best defensive player, so never say never....

Hold UP

Stop step away from the Kool-aid, this conversation makes no sense. Will Smith is the best defensive player the Saints have hands down. Will applied pressure in most games but the QB steps up in to the lane.

Remember he was the guy that gave us the lead in Tampa Bay fiasco

The offense had not played well yet we were still in the game early 4th qtr Will Smith dumped Chuck McNown for a safety. Then the play of the year occurred

I agree that giving Charles Grant that kind of money was not the smartest move that Loomis has ever made.

I disagree that Will Smith is slow he had 7 sacks last year without getting any help form the rest of the DL. You can't trade Smith unless you absolutly do not think that you will be able to resign the guy.

If you are forced to trade him then you only do it for value, which in his case is definatly a 1st round pick.

I don't see why you'd trade a proven commodity like will smith and then draft the same position with your compensation. that pick could turn out to be garbage. at least we know what we have with smith.

I kinda agree with the OP abou Smith being expendable. I don;t think he is getting it done here, Now I would have rather given Smith the deal Grant got and let Grant find a new team in FA... but we didn't. If Smith wants to give us a discount then I would be all for keeping him around. IF he wants Grant money (which he deserves if your comparing the 2, who both under played) Than he deserves it. But if we got a top 10 (well number 10) DT in Dorsey, or Ellis, I myself would certainly consider Smith trade bait. He holds more value than anyone else on our defense despite underachiveing (no one is gonna take Grant with that salary, and who else do we have on the roster tradable)

Alot is gonna depend on Smiths loyality to the team, well he try and negotiate a fair deal that will help benefi the team overall. Or will we ask for the bank (which he can probably get if he hits the market)

Not to Mention if we got a top DT in the draft, how much can we afford on the line before we start to suffer. Payton likes his offense and its clear they will command most of the money (Brees, Bush, Deuce, Meachem, Colston (soon), J. Brown) all are and will probably in Colstons case break the bank. Top 10 pick money on that DT, Grants monster deal, and a matching one for Smith (will probably want) How much can we expect to upgrade the other areas on defense. We will need at least 1 corner (possibly 2), a MLB and could use better OLB (mainly ROLB) and more consistency from the safety position.

Now I would like to see Will Smith in here at a fair deal, and I would have rather given Smith the payday over Grant and let him seek FA and hope for a compensation pick. But we did not. I'm not saying Smith is the weakest link on the D. But our defense as a whole was ineffective last year, no one player is gonna change that, if we can upgrade as a unit through the draft/ FA and there is no money left to give Smith that deal he can get elsewhere, than I say we should absolutly consider offers for him.

Some of you are echoing my view point.

First I would not have resigned Grant. He is a run stopping DE, but I do not think you give top dollar to a guy that isn't a difference maker. Charles has need to drop weight for the last couple of seasons. He rode into the draft with a lot of hype, but wasn't most of his sack in his senior year in college against one team (Auburn?).

However now that you paid Grant you have to pay out of the nose for Smith if you want to keep him. Smith has gotten fat as well. He does not have the burst off the ball like he did in college. We basically have two block eating DEs with one that as decent pass rush skills. It reminds me of Jax's ends.

I am not opposed to trading Smith. He may have the most talent on our D, but he has not been the presence that many thought he would be coming out of college. IMO if your job performance is suffering because you cannot keep your weight down then I would question your dedication to your profession. Get in shape and give 100%...

Would this in your opinion translate well towards a 3-4 scheme if of course we could get a couple of Pash rushing Lbers and a Nose tackle. Is the new Dline coach a 4-3 specialist?

So whats the proposed trade? Smith for picks? Smith for cheaper defensive players? Smith for Johnson would be huge but it wouldn't solve our defensive OR salary problems.

i'm already on record (from before he was resigned) as saying we should not pay grant top 5 money, but we nearly did so anyway... if grant can't lose weight he'll continue to be a pretty good run stuffer and football player... as for smith, i don't know what i'd do now that i've already paid grant all that money... he's not as good against the run as grant, and he's not exactly a speed rushing DE either...

i'd only trade him this year if i could get superior value for him, say from someone needing DEs (like denver)... the big question comes next year, unless they decide to bite the bullet and extend him this year... i'd still like to see smith move to LDE and grant move inside, but that ain't gonna happen

Will Smith does put a lot of pressure on the QB, it's just hard to get a sack when the QB in able to step up in the pocket. Our DT's are not even average, they are horrible.

I disagree. It's scheme and linebackers. The scheme dictates that the DEs play disciplined and contain the run. The DTs are plugging blockers and creating gaps, but our LBs stink. They can't tackle and don't seem to ever be in the right place.

Is it possible for a Will Smith trade?

I think highly unlikely....Smith & Grant are the two cornerstones on this D which desperately needs upgrading at allmost every other position. There's even the idea of putting Grant inside and drafting a pass rusher like Gholston to play on the end. Gholston should be gone at #10, as should Dorsey & Ellis....but.....

I can only dream how good this line would be with Ellis or Dorsey anchoring the middle....put a free agent upgrade Lber behind them and suddenly things are looking way better for next season.

You don't get rid of Will Smith. He's not the problem, he's part of the solution. If you can find his pre-draft analysis, you'll read that Smith is the type of player that does what you ask him to do. This means, if you tell Smith "We need the ball back", he'll go get it. You don't get rid of a player like that. You also keep Grant. That dude is all heart. The weakness of the Defence is right in the middle of the field( and off to the side behind the LB's). DE's can't do anything about those spots in a Defence, no matter how good they are.

I am glad that be have both Smith and Grant, they IMO are extremely talented and I think they should be paid but they need to be called out this year. Grant and Smith need to get back in pass rushing shape

you cannot keep Wil Smith because of the money we already spent on Grant. No team can afford that. You really can't get rid of Grant because it's too much of a cap hit. Smith has 2 years left on his contract. If you allow him to get to the last year of the contract, the Saints really don't have any bargining power on a trade... but since it was a 5-year contract, Smith will be an UFA and can simply walk.

The Saints made a decision to keep Grant and that sealed the fate of Smith. Smith is really good, but not elite. Regardless of his weight, he has never been someone that opposing teams had to scheme against. Cooper, albeit not the same as Smith, can hold his own at the position.

Get as much as we can in a trade for Wil Smith now... and let's boost our defense on the D-Line, LB and secondary.
