I've been frequenting Craigslist lately, looking mainly for guitars and/or playstations and/or straw hats, and I noticed a section for "erotic services". Now maybe I'm completely misinterpreting what these services are, but they appear to be prostitution. Seems like if this was illegal, it would be pretty easy for the government to shut down as every ad has a phone number in it. Do they just not care enough? Or are these "services" something different?

Edit: oh, and don't open those ads up at work

Those are either stings or scams. The local news here seems to constantly be running undercover sting ops involving Craigslist.

The suck thing would be if your state's statutes make "Johns" a crime where you have to register as a sex offender. Prostitutes in Louisiana do register for "Crimes Against Nature" but I don't believe they necessarily force the 'clients' to also register (noticing neighbors et al). The stung could have some explaining to do.

a couple of my friends didn't realize there was anything else ON Craigslist.

When i told them you could buy used lawnmowers and Saints tickets there, it was like the Bee Girl finding the pasture.

Jonesy, have you checked out the Epiphone acoustic / electrics? They are really sweet, and not too pricy.

There are many illegal substances, products, and services available on the internets.

I saw those in Tampa area very plentiful adds. But they usually cover up by saying code as "Migrain Relief" 75$ half hour. Or "erotic message"150/hr incall or 200/hr outcall.

FayObserver.com - Current Article Page

This was on the front page of yesterday's local newspaper. Here is what Craigslist has to say:

Susan Best, a spokeswoman for Craigslist, said using the site for prostitution is unacceptable.

“As is evident from news reports around the country, Craigslist actually makes it easier for police departments to conduct sting operations against prostitution rings,’’ Best said. “If you’re a prostitute or a potential john, you’re taking a big risk putting a listing on Craigslist, because we cooperate actively with police departments.’’

Best said the Web site recently implemented new requirements for erotic services ads that make it more difficult for prostitutes to advertise. The company bans illegal activity in its terms of use, warns against illegal activity and has a community moderation system that flags inappropriate ads. People whose ads are flagged are removed and are prevented from posting future ads, she said.

“There tends to be a great focus on Craigslist ads of this sort, but, factually, phone company directories, weekly newspapers and other media not only carry such ads but charge for them, and even if we somehow could ban them altogether, they’d just start putting them on offshore Web sites, out of U.S. control altogether, making it more difficult for law enforcement officials to detect and prosecute criminals using the site,’’ Best said
