In my defense I was a bunch of beers into a Saturday night. I deleted it but can't delete the quoted posts .....post in poor taste on my part. My apologies. This could apply to many areas of the country and parts of cities, so I am going to leave dis die right chere, ya feel me?
cool wHipIt's halfway between silent and not silent. This is why for some people, it's completely silent, and for others it's clearly pronounced. For me, it's not a clear 'p' sound, but it denotes a clear break in the word between "pum" and "kin".
I'm more concerned about the 'L' in words like walk, talk, chalk. I had an English teacher in High School who told us a story about being bullied for his accent (Boston) when he was a kid, then a few weeks later made fun of me in front of the class for pronouncing the 'L' in chalk. (not a full 'L', but like a dip in the word) To me, Wok is something you cook in, Chock is a safety device you put under the wheel of a car, and Tok is something a clock does. Don't get me started on how he pronounced clock.
