Isn't Sean Payton's contract up next year? (MERGED) (1 Viewer)

There is a difference what McCarthy did and what Sean Payton did.....Payton had success in his 1st year, and that looks a lot like what Haslet did.......McCarthy on the other hand had the same success in his 2nd year....he started slow, and then build up on his 1st year's mediocre season. That is viewed a lot more favorably, exactly for the reason that the direction of the team is upward......unlike the Saints, which tanked out in the 2nd season under Payton, and are heading downward, instead of going upward.

Benson learned this the hard way with Haslet, and he is not going to make the same mistake again.....if the Saints are stagnating again this year, Payton's tenure as the Saints HC might be short lived, I'm afraid....

Two false presumptions here:

1. Haslett and Payton and their first two years as Saints' HC are reasonable equivalents. While there are some parallels, there are also a number of significant differences: Payton has yet to show any know-it-all belligerence, has shown reasonable self-analysis and accountability, and has an approach to talent (character is a requirement) currently favored by a number of the league's better teams like Indy and New England. These are two very different coaches.

2. The support systems in New Orleans and Green Bay are the same. Maybe it's just me, but it seems like Green Bay's overall player personnel staff is doing a better and more cohesive job than the one in New Orleans. Ron Wolf was a great GM and left a solid system in place. After five years, with some big hits and some big misses, you'd have to put the stamp on the Saints overall team (Loomis + college and pro scouting + whoever the HC is) at "average", some nice hits, some big misses and just a little bit in the middle.

It's like gambling, and lots of other things: You can't base all your decisions in the present by looking strictly at the results of the past. You've got to get to the reasons behind the results, and the decisions you made that affected them.
