It has begun(Rogers close to "massive deal") (1 Viewer)

Brees' contract almost looks cheap now. Flacco got the same $ as Brees and Rodgers is gonna break the bank.

NFL Aaron Rodgers closer to extension - ESPN

Aaron Rogers is close to a contract extension that will pay him 25m annually. At the rate the QB contracts are increasing, we will be paying drew's replacement 35 mil annually on his 2nd contract. Something has to be done

Our next QB is gonna have to do alot before he gets 35mil/yr. Drew's gonna be here for 5+ more so I don't even want to think about it.

He may be close to a new deal but I don't buy the 25 million or 23 million a year speculation. That's either coming from his agent or some random reporter trying to draw up a story.

Seriously, why would the Packers do that? He has two years left on his deal. Why make him the highest paid QB in the league by THAT big of a margin? I'm sure he'd gladly accept 20.5 million a year especially considering what he's currently making.

good for him. plus, the more he makes the more the falcons are gonna have to shell out for ryan. good luck with that and when julio jones comes asking for calvin johnson type money.

It manages itself. If teams can hoist Lombardis paying QBs 20-40% of the cap, they'll continue to do it. If it winds up crippling teams, they'll stop. It's pretty simple. Right now here's the last 20 SB winning QBs:

Flacco
Eli
Rodgers
Brees

Roethlisberger
Eli

Peyton
Roethlisberger
Brady
Brady

Brad Johnson
Brady
Dilfer
Warner
Elway
Elway
Favre
Aikman
Young
Aikman

The 6 oldest were all won by QBs now in the HOF in bold.
Half (7 of 14) since then have been won by QBs who are almost certain HOF inductees one day in italics.
4 more were won by QBs with multiple pro-bowls and at least by partisans argued as elite QBs in underline.
Flacco is relatively young and hard to judge, maybe he goes with the underlined guys when all is said an done.

Only 2 of the last 20 Super Bowls has been won with a clearly average or worse QB, and both had outstanding league leading defenses.

As long as GMs see that 90% of the time seemingly over-investing in QB pays out with rings, that's what they'll do. If they start spending 80% of the cap on a QB, that would surely change. When the result changes, that's when the price will come down.

Here's another article about his contract.

Aaron Rodgers soon to become NFL's highest-paid quarterback - CBSSports.com

I really like this part:

Since 2008, when Rodgers became a starter, only Brees (24,730) has thrown for more yards than he has (21,332). Only Peyton Manning (67.6) and Brees (67.5) have a better completion percentage (65.9). Only Brees (190) has thrown for more touchdowns than Rodgers (170), and only Brees (193) has more completions of 25 yards or more (Rodgers is at 183).

However, Rodgers is superior in pretty much every other way.

either the NFL's salary cap is going need to grow a lot or teams are going to have to get these QB salaries under control

Matt Ryan won't get that much money unless he wins a Super Bowl before it's contract time

My argument against this is that none of those teams were paying their QB 20-40% of the cap when they won their super bowl. We've yet to see a team win the super bowl in the same year that their QB was taking up 20+% of the cap
