If you look back at the 2017 big boards Patrick Mahomes didn't cause much of a stir pre-draft - I don't think any mocks showed him being taken in the top 10. WalterFootball had him rated #33 on their big board. No one really knows how these guys are going to perform in an NFL game until they step on the field in a live game that means something. Look at Brock Purdy for example. The qb situation this year is probably average and there will be some surprises both for the good and bad. It's a crap shoot - always.
