With 333 former college players at this week's NFL combine, it'll take a lot for the players with Virginia ties to stand out.

The NFL combine serves as an important tool to help scouts and general managers determine the mental and physical have's and have not's in a pool of 333 recent college players, but it's also proof NFL talent evaluation can be an inexact science.

After players participate Wednesday through Feb. 26 in the combine, there are no guarantees any of them will be any closer to finding out where they're headed in April's NFL draft than before they arrived in Indianapolis. Barring an excellent or terrible effort that either turns heads or turns off NFL brass, it's difficult for players to immediately tell how much the combine helps their draft stock.

In 2005, former Hampton University receiver Jerome Mathis made a big move at the combine. His 40-yard dash time of 4.28 seconds, which was the fastest at the combine, vaulted him from being a potential late-round pick to being a fourth-round selection of the Houston Texans.
