Was Suggs really smallish coming out of college or just slow? Did he put on most of his muscle in the NFL? I ask because I really don't remember him coming out and by the time he became a household name he was already ripped like he is today. I have heard the comparisons to his 40 time whenever a DE/OLB puts up a slow 40 though.

I may be wrong on saying he was smallish. I was meaning "length". I seem to remember hearing that he didn't have the speed or the length teams desire in an edge rusher. And like I said, I could be wrong there.

6' 3" 265 lbs at combine
4.84 /40
19 reps on bench

I think they need to draft an OT @ 62. jmo.......
I hear ya. High quality OL play is essential for this offense to run smoothly. I wouldn’t mind an OT if a highly rated guy drops and the value is there. That gives us a great backup plan in case of injuries to Armstead (seems inevitable at this point). But if a top C that can start right away drops that could provide immediate production with newly signed Easton playing backup to anywhere on the interior when injuries hit and allows Easton to slide over to starting left guard next season when Peat leaves (doubt we’ll able to bring him back, some team will be willing to overpay him bc he can play LT).

Or Easton turns out to be a great center for us and that's not a need for the next 4 years. Then we'd just need a guard, but they're not as hard to find as OTs... so what we really need is a Tackle to groom.

I mean he could. Not discounting that. He’s great a pass pro. Supposed to be weak in the run game but guards and OTs have more of a role in the run game in our blocking scheme

More reason for us to hope Easton turns out to be the answer at center. More cerebral than physical.

Another player with very similar measurables to Polite is Oshane Ximines from ODU. Both are 6’3”, with about 33in arms, and nearly 10in hands. And like Polite (258lbs) , I think Ximines (253lbs) may have added some extra weight prior to the Combine. He posted a 4.78 forty, had a decent vertical (34in) and broad(118in) and put up a nice 24 reps on the bench.

Polite played against better competition in the SEC. But Ximines was pretty versatile, playing some LB at SAM ( n we could use a lil extra depth at LB) in addition to being an edge rusher.

However IMO, both might be a lil too undersized for us. When looking for an edge player, I remember reading where Coach Nielsen wants bigger guys, who can eventually be every down players that can also set the edge n play against the run, as well as rush the passer.

That could always change of course. You probably won’t find dat big DE at 62, and it’s gonna take a take a good chunk a change ( 62 PLUS next year’s 1st and/ or 2nd rd pick). to move up if you really want him. But IF either one of those 2 is the BPA on our board when our time comes at 62, so be it!

We’ll see.

I found this scouting report on him:

The good news is that he’s projected to be a good C in a zone scheme, which we run.

What I couldn’t find were measurables on his hand size n esp his arm length. If anybody has em, I’d appreciate it if u post em!

It’s because tho listed at 6’3”and 300 lbs, the report said he has a squatty frame, and may struggle against “longer” D linemen. So I’m thinking while he may have even added another 10-15 lbs n strength the last few years to give him a lil more anchor at the POA, he may have short arms, which might be his biggest liability.

Other than that, it seems he’s pretty quick n athletic. So for now, I think he can be solid for us.

Ya, i really like Ximines, too. He's not as explosive or the arc bender that Polite is off the edge, but Ximines arguably has the best set of rush moves/counters in the entire draft. That dude is a pretty refined pass rusher, regardless of who he played and his level of competition. Would not be mad at all if we drafted Ximines at 62 either. Again, we may not be drafting in prime time, but I have no doubt that we're gonna get really talented guy.

I'm just not sure that Polite is the right fit with the Saints. I dont care about his combine or pro day. He was an animal on the field and I think that will translate if used correctly. The Saints don't really use guys like him the right way. His talent would be wasted in NOLA.

Nothing wrong with him, just not the right fit.

Man, I really didn’t know a lot about either. I shoulda asked folks for more input to compare the 2 like you did!

Thanks! :9:

Last year I really liked Harold Landry out of Boston college. He was also a lil undersized, but he was explosive off the edge and could run the arc as well as anybody I’ve ever seen! Many said he was just a one trick pony but others countered that it was a hell of a trick! ?

Ya, his effort/motor runs pretty hot from beginning to end. I mean, those plays came at the end of a close game when UF needed them the most. And Polite was that type of player all year. He's a clutch defender who shows up in crunch time. He'd be the perfect rotational pressure specialist to pair w/Cam and Davenport. Plus, we're suddenly a bit thin at EDGE/DE after losing AO57. We signed Mario Edwards, and though he's played and has the size of a base DE, he's more of a DT in the same vein as former Cowgirl Jay Ratliff. I think a player like Polite could/would be an instant contributor as a pass rusher. For fun, imagine a NASCAR front w/Polite, Cam, Davenport, and former UF teammate Anzalone...That would be some pretty intimidating pressure right there.

IMO, Mario was one our most underrated signings this offseason. I think he will help us big time!

With Sheldon likely out for an extended time, and Onyemata facing a possible suspension early on, Edwards will be key for depth in the DT rotation.

But if we draft a player like Polite, once DO returns, we’ll have 3 DTs : Onyemata, Brown n Stallworth, 3 DEs : Cam, Davenport n Polite, and then the versatile Edwards, who can play BOTH the DT n DE spots.

I think we were all pleasantly surprised with the play of AO the last 2 years. I’m hopeful that we can get similar effort n production from Mario Edwards this season!
