Just asking cause I have blinders on :hihi:

What LSU player coming out could not make the Saints Team I see all of them being a upgrade to what we put on the Field last year?

Matt Flynn and Jacob Hester to start with. Palko and Martin are better than Flynn and all of the runningbacks, including Karney (which is the position Hester is going to have to play) are better than Hester. You can probably add Craig Steltz and Johnathan Zennon to the list as well.

Look, I'm a big LSU fan, but not every LSU player who was good in college fits in the NFL.

I am not convinced that sure Palko is better than Flynn.
Think you are wrong on everybody but Hester he could not replace Karney I agree with that, but he can get 3 yards in the NFL without dropping the ball someone will take him.

Steltz and Z will be playing on sunday's as well.
I think they both would be upgrades for the Saints.
JMO have to wait and see.

I think Hester runs a lot like Deuce. Neither is overly impressive at first glance but they find a way to get through the hole and then are deceptively fast. Even if Deuce is good this year Hester could play sp teams and be ready if something happens again. I would love to have him.

Palko was a very good college QB with below average talent around him. Flynn was an average college QB with great talent around him. Flynn lacks the arm strength, accuracy and coverage reading skills necessary in the NFL. Flynn is not enough of a "student of the game" to make it that way and he lacks the athletic talent to overcome his lack of great instincts and football IQ.

Steltz is too slow to play safety in the NFL. Moreover, he lacks the quickness and hip turn to be even marginally good in coverage. He would be an absolute liability. He is a special teams player like Gleason in the NFL. A guy valuable on special teams, but you cringe at the thought of having to put him in on defense. Zennon might be decent as a #5 CB, so, he might be an upgrade at that position for the Saints.

Hester is a guy who will play H-Back and be a very good special teams player. He might even develop into a short yardage back, but you have to wonder if the determination advantage he had in college will be nullified by the increased speed and athleticism in the NFL. Many great college short yardage backs aren't good at it in the NFL. Heck, even great NFL backs have trouble getting short yardage in the NFL. It's really hard to run on an NFL team if they know you are going to run right at them.

So, I don't see Hester as an upgrade at any position. That being said, I would not mind Hester in the 6th or 7th round. He would be good on special teams and would add a nice receiving weapon out of the backfield for Payton. I just don't see that as an upgrade, unless you use him to take Gleason's spot on the roster. If that happened he would be an upgrade over leason because he would see the field more at a real position.

If Hester is anything like Deuce, he is like the post injury Deuce only much slower. When Deuce was healthy he was quick and very explosive. Hester runs like a FB. He is a short strider who can only make very small changes in direction. He is good at finding the hole, but once through it, he lacks the speed and/or quickness to make anything happen other than trying to out physical a defender. That worked in college, but he lack the athleticism to pull that off in the NFL.

In short, he is nothing like Deuce except that they are both big backs. Deuce is a fast, long striding cut back runner who also happens to be big. Hester is a slow power back with good vision.

Very Nice rebuttle St. Widge thanks

Why dont' we cut the entire Saints team and just field the LSU team on Sunday?

We could but it would not be fair to other Teams!

Hester was fine in college, but haven't we learned from drafting over-rated LSU guys? Devery Henderson anyone?

Good observation on Palko/Flynn.

I too don't think Hester is an upgrade, but he could prove to be a valuable pickup in the 6th/7th rd.

Same goes with your Steltz/Zenon outlook. Steltz? No. Zenon? At Nickle/Dime, he could be good. That's why we need to get C Jackson instead.:ezbill:

Hester would be a good fit--filling several spots.

TB
1. Deuce (if healthy)
1A. Reggie (Playing his "Guess Where We got Reggie this Play" role).
2. Pierre Thomas.
3. Hester.
4. Jamal Branch. ?

FB
1. Karney.
2. Hester.

Put Hester in as the lone RB when we are in the 4 WR spread--for blocking, safety valve outlet pass and that occasional draw to keep the defense guessing.

Hester would be a solid back-up for several positions & a spot player: short yardage, solo RB in the spread, special teams. He might not be LDT, AP, or RunDMC, but over the course of the 16+ game season, he could become a valuable part of the offense.

Just my thoughts.

Good post Rum,

That's about what I was thinking (big time special teams and short yardage specialist).
Look at how many times after Deuce got hurt last year that we went on reverses or something more risky than plowing out a 1st down. I think you could plug Hester in a LOT of places and he's one of the toughest players I saw in college last year (along with Tebow).
