The Oakland Raiders perhaps have cleared the way to take former LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell with the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft.
The Raiders released quarterback Aaron Brooks on Thursday, unburdening the team of a potential $5 million roster bonus in March. Brooks played six seasons in New Orleans (2000-2005). He was 0-8 as the Raiders' starter in 2006, completing 57.3 percent of his passes for 1,105 yards with three touchdowns and eight interceptions.
Veteran quarterback Marques Tuiasosopo is expected to become a free agent Thursday, leaving third-year player Andrew Walter (three touchdown passes, 13 interceptions in 2006) as the only experienced quarterback on the roster.
The Raiders passed on Matt Leinart and Jay Cutler with the seventh overall pick in the 2006 draft in favor of Texas safety Michael Huff.
