Search wikipedia for "Jim Jones" and "Jonestown".

I just heard about him for the first time today. Here is an audio tape of him right before and during the mass suicides. (45 minutes, not for the faint of heart, you can hear children screaming for their lives).

Also, listen for Christine, who tries to get out of it, but has no chance. The camp was surrounded by armed guards.

Absolutely haunting.

The music you hear is from a pre-recording that was warped when this recording was put over it.

Jones was screwed up, Hilltopper. he was about to be arrested for tax evasion when he left for Central America where this horrible deed occurred eventually. Its odd too that this church was once located in San Francisco, the congressman who was sent to investigate the area. even he being a liberal Democrat saw this guy was on the skids. If I am not mistaken, even he was gunned down by some of Jones gunmen. It has often been my thinking that the reason why he did this mass suicide is because of him gunning down that congressman and his aides. Jim Jones knew it was coming down hard after that, his *** was on a platter after he did that, so he went ahead with this evil evil act with his followers in the guise of his cult thinking as an excuse

Yep, Jones sent some men to kill the Congressman and his aides before they could leave. I suppose that is why he ordered the murder-suicide. So disturbing.

Hill, take David Koresh and the Branch Davidians bunch. those people were out of their minds, and what you see is what you saw here with Jones in the 70's. You have a strong willed leader who has a charismatic message and can influence impressionable young men and women and convince them he is the alpha and the omega of everything. Its the devices of cult thinking. Plus let me add their were a lot of pseudo-religious thinking in the 60's and 70's man. you had a lot of these hippy/ political/anti-authority figures popping up and saying we have all the solutions to the country's problems and honest, intelligent people get caught up in it. Jim Jones was merely a radical form of that thinking , he preached the guises of communal living and socialist thinking to attract people to his cause and then he exploited them like they were his a mini dictator of a small country.
large Cults act that way and often times you see a bad result out of it

And apparently, he targeted and recruited the poverty-stricken families that he himself had built centers for and helped financially. Now they feel an added sense of obligation and gratitude, combined with their desperation for the "ultimate answer". The mindest behind their decision (although some were forced to kill themselves or were murdered) would be interesting to study, albeit a bit macabre.

well thats the guise of a cult, hill. Most start out in the guise of being a upright morally good entity and then they slowly or gradually turn into monsters and mini-dictators of the people they originally helped. A good present day example is that Warren Jeffs guy in Utah of the radical Mormon off shoot church. they are nuts, hill. 100% percent nut jobs, I don't take this as a swipe at all Mormons minds you because most of them are decent people having met a few in my life. But Jeffs people actually celebrated when the Twin Towers came down on 9/11. their anti-government, anti-authority, anti-established Mormonism. This Jeffs guy is like or similar to Jones in many ways IMHO. Being a somewhat conservative catholic, I disagree with some liberal teachings of the Church, but I still believe in the core elements of its institutions. I can see the flaws in it as any reasonable human being would, but I still think it can do good. these cults do no good, they exploit and use religion in the ways of getting power.

At one point as well as I remember he could have been as big as the big time preachers of that time in the 60s and 70s. yea I remember on TV when the Congressman and his aids were killed. Jones was jacked up on drugs and told his followers that the military would come after them and tear their world apart. They took the bait and after they were all gone he shot himself. A few escaped. The Congressman should have realized that his mission was futile but it was to late. They actually have it on live film of him being killed along with his staffers while they were getting on the plane. I bet if you Google it you will find it.

I was a young one when that went down, but, I am familiar with that freak...he murdered over 900 people. They didn't want to commit suicide.

A dvd documentary called Jonestown was released about 2 months ago> watch it. It is haunting.

They also regularly run a show about that nutjob on History Channel (I think). Crazy = ratings.

guyana cult of the damned.
it was a movie about this incident. i watched it when i was about 12.
ill never understand why things like this happen..

The article and pics of the bodies were some things that I'll never get out of my mind. I forgot the name of the mag, but I would get of of bed to read it again & again as a kid. I'm not sure if it's still in circulation, but it was like Time. It was larger than standard mags. I used to look forward to that and NG.

I was teenager when that happened. I remember being stunned by the number of deaths/suicides and thought "that just can't be right". It turned out that it wasn't right. The final number was twice as high as was originally reported.

There was a TV movie "Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones" about 25 years ago. Powers Boothe was so great in the role of Jim Jones, so charismatic and evil, that it ruined Boothe in my eyes and I held a grudge for the next 20 years.
