Losing your hair sucks! I'm super self-conscious about it. If I had the financial means I'd probably do the surgery without a second thought too.
I shaved my head at 25 and haven't stopped since

As a performer the stage lights made it look like I had a growing halo
I was too young to play faded glory uncle types

Here's what I don't get, you're vain so you get the plugs. But then when you still have to leave the house while they're growing in and it's SO obvious, but you're not too vain for that. (It's kind of like women with hair curlers going out to run errands with vanity completely out the window.) I know a guy who got plugs only to later have cancer and chemo and ended up completely bald. Money down the drain and he looked WAY better bald anyway.

Hair or no hair, Joe Buck's not nearly the big deal he thinks he is.

I'm still not sure what plugs have to do with paralyzing his vocal cords. The article acts like the connection is as obvious as understanding lifting something heavy without using your legs might cause back strain.

P.S. Did see another article with the simple explanation, just weird that B/R left it out. I know it's a weak site, but c'mon.

Maybe he had the money and schedules that allowed him to hide out at home for a few weeks while things filled in.

I'm sure HE did but your average guy still has to go to out and go to work. Actually, I bet plenty of people Joe comes into contact with on a daily basis knew, he just was able to stay off camera somehow (and he probably went around wearing a baseball cap in disguise so, you know, he wouldn't be bothered by the hoi polloi asking for his autograph).

Damn people are pretty worked up that the #1 television announcer for both the MLB World Series and NFL on Fox, which are not only nationally but globally covered, would be worried about the nightmare of dealing with male pattern baldness.

I mean sheesh, I might see at most 10-15 people a day and I am absolutely self conscious about every precious little piece of hair left on my head. I couldn't imagine being watched by millions around the world and how self conscious I'd feel. Especially with the career he has, which is absolutely hinged on maintaining an image.

Even more respect to the guy for addressing it in a memoir.

It's more about insecurity than vanity. Maybe they are two sides of the same coin, but I take vanity to mean "I want everybody to see how great I am" vs. insecurity being "I hope nobody sees how stupid I look."
huh. now you've got me chewing on that question - they're def linked, maybe like pokemon evolutions
Vanity certainly comes from insecurity - i knew precious few vain but confident people (none really)
-- it seems like they're linked in the same way fear and anger are linked
