John Carney with hair (1 Viewer)

Carney's first head coach was Ray Perkins at Tampa, back when Wilder was their leading rusher.

I recently found this photo of Carney circa 1992-93 -

"I have come here to do two things...chew bubble gum and kick field goals....and I'm all out of bubble gum."

He looks like a cross between Michael Keaton and Jim McMahon.

Those Charger uniforms are worse than the ones they wear now.

was Carney the kicker for the Chargers who had a broken arm and kicked with cast on with his arm in a sling? does anybody remember that?

I can't say for sure, but I think that was Rolf Benirschke who played several years w/San Diego before Carney.

Carney actually played at Tiger Stadium in 1986 w/Notre Dame ... made a long-field goal that was called back due to a penalty ... then missed the retry. As a Charger, Carney beat the Saints on a field goal in 1991.

The thing is....I'm watching this game and it is a whole lot of awesome. You got the pride of NLU Stan Humphries leading his team from behind. And another former Indian in Irving Spikes running for Miami. YOu got Don Shula on a scooter. Natrone Means totally wiped out an official who (incorrectly) signaled "touchdown" while he was wiping out. Did I mention Natrone Means? You got Gene Atkings balling out and making plays. Great game. Can't believe I spent part of my Friday night watching it, but great game.

16 to 17 years later.
