N/S Jonathan Vilma arrested in Miami for suspended drivers license (1 Viewer)

The tags are a non-issue and the suspended license could be as well.

Could be something as simple as him changing car insurance companies and his old insurance company being salty and reporting his insurance policy lapsing and the DMV/OMV putting a block on his license. That happened to me before.

Didn’t cost anything, but had to go to the DMV with the paperwork for the old policy and new policy to show there was no lapse and got it resolved.

Was coming here to post this exact thing. Could be a simple insurance change foul-up. Having your license suspended doesn't take much. Had what you describe happen to me once a couple of years ago, and thankfully the officer was cool about it and just told me to go handle it asap and he said that he'd put on my "account" or whatever he called it that he spoke with me and just told me to take care of it, as a warning (I got pulled over because his surveillance radar device alerted him to my license plate, so he put the note so I wouldn't get pulled over again for a few days).

Had no idea you could be arrested for it though. I always thought the absolute worse thing that could happen would be that you'd just see your car get towed away and a hefty fine, unless of course you were a habitual offender and/or did something unlawful while driving suspended.

I think an expired license and a suspended license are different things.

Usually happens when you don't pay tickets or fines.

That’s true. I did unknowingly have mine suspended once. When I was in the military I deployed overseas and canceled my insurance while I was gone. Didn’t know that wasn’t allowed but it saved me a lot of money at 19 years old. It wasn’t until the next time I went to renew my registration that I found out my license was suspended because I had a lapse in coverage. Think I had to pay $100 fine back then.

If his license was suspended for expired tags or any other reason (hair ticket) then there was likely a warrant for his arrest when he he got pulled over. The officer at that point has no choice but to.arrest him.

This happened to.me in the late 90's. I had been ticketed for a missing plate and at that time you called and got the fine amount and mailed.n a money order. You never got.a receipt and just assumed it was taken care of. About 2 years later I got pulled over while.in a different truck and got arrested for unpaid ticket. Had to get bailed out and when I showed for the course I.told the judge I had sold.the original.vehicle to a junk yard and no.longer had a copy of the money order since it was iz the glove box at that time. He dismissed the case.

I'll take "Things that happen to people of color far more often than white people" for $500.
Have been in this situation as a white person. I was not arrested. I did pay a hell of a fine for it though (insurance lapse). -- Word to the wise, do not put your recurring monthly on a card that expires. ACH is the way to go. --- but like poster above said, if outstanding warrant -- it might not be as nefarious as it seems (but owning up that it could be). I don't think any of us here thinks Vilma is a bad person and would expect this to get sorted out.

Also, of note. Louisiana was the first state in the union to have a digital license. Things that you would never expect to happen in Louisiana for $500.

If that's the worst thing he's done (and hopefully ever does), then he's still good with me.

It's actually easy to forget to renew a DL and/or a license plate sticker. You can't just tap an app and it magically affixes itself to the plate. Gotta put forth an effort!

Renew your DL for as long as the law allows in your state. Mississippi only recently began allowing people to renew it for longer than just four years. Also, here, you have to renew your plate sticker every single year and it's based on the alleged value of the vehicle. Perhaps the board can help me here, but Louisiana is every other year (which is of course better) and it's a flat price, not an "ad valorem" deal.
How "meh" or awful this is really boils down to what the license was suspended for...

Inquiring minds want to know; what did he do to get his license suspended in the first place? DWI/DUI/pot possession immediately come to mind, but there are probably some other more serious traffic offenses that could result in a suspension.
