Does anyone know if he will be signing with the saints for the 2008 season? I like this guy! i take him over O.M anytime..:worthy:

I would imagine he'd be brought back at least to battle Mare, though I really think Gramatica should just get the job outright.

Unless the Saints draft a kicker in the draft, then all bets are off.

You're being short-sighted, Mare was finally healthy in the final game before his hip injury. Every kickoff except one, I believe was a touchback.

If Mare is healthy going into 2008, he is a better kicker than Gramatica by a factor of 100.

Field position was not really a factor in our games considering most teams can score anywhere on the field. I do not see the big deal in touchbacks. I would much rather not be chewing my arm off everytime we attempt a field goal.

i agree he was getting better. he was nailing a lot of stuff. touchbacks were a big thing. gramatica cant do that at his age (thats why we got rid of carney) i predict mare will be back in 2008.

I'll take Mare as a kickoff specialist but I do not want him as our fulltime kicker next year. Gramatica was 5-5 in 07, 7-9 in 06, and perfect in the 06 preseason...couple years younger too.

It would be odd if we dumped Carney for a stronger leg, less accurate leg only to dump him for a guy that is accurate yet weak legged. Back to Carney?

Granted, Martin sure showed some leg in his return, but can he do that consistantly?

Age is a big factor. Carney is almost 45 years old. Gramatica nailed a 55 yarder that would've been good from 60. Carney could not do that at this point in his career. I'd much rather have an accurate kicker that can kick out to 50-55 yards than a kicker who can get touchbacks but misses half of his field goals...or a kicker who is only good from 45 yards and in.

I totally agree with this.

I think this season proved that if it takes two kickers to get the job done then it is worth sacrificing the extra roster spot to carry 2. We should keep Mare as the kickoff guy and bring in whoever we deem to be the best field goal kicker whether its Carney, Gramatica or someone else.

Also, to those who think that we should see what a healthy Mare has, his decline began in Miami before the injuries. They were desperate to get rid of him and honestly I don't think they were expecting any compensation. He was also kicking poorly here before the injury.

I'm not saying that he won't come back next year and kick well again, I'm just saying there's a mounting history that Mare's best days are behind him.

I would think both have a shot at battling for a roster spot. I seriously doubt the Saints will burn a draft pick on a kicker, but wouldn't be surprised to see a undrafted free agent brought in if Grammatica doesn't come back.

Considering Mare lost us atleast one game this season, and Gramatica was dead on, I'd stick with Gramatica. Mare had me nervous everytime he lined up for a fieldgoal.

Thanks for the input! feel free to put your commets up. Looking to see what will happen next year!
