I don't know if anyone saw this yesterday, but there was an Inside Sportscenter Draft Special talking about prospects in this upcoming NFL draft. (Sorry, no link. Saw it on TV. I'm sure it's on ESPN's video archives if you want to see it bad enough.) In one of the segments, ESPN took CB Antoine Cason, RB Jacob Hester, WR Dexter Jackson and a couple of other guys to New York City for interviews and what-not. Anyway, after that segment; they put Mel Kiper on to discuss Jacob Hester as a prospect. Kiper said that several teams were interested in Hester for his versitility, saying that he reminded him of FB Brian Leonard of the rams. Kiper also spoke glowingly about Hester's ability to get those tough yards on 3rd and short situations. What really perplexed me is that he said that he can see Hester going to the Buccaneers in the 3rd round. (YES, 3rd ROUND!!!) Now, I admit that I am one of those that made one of the hundreds of Pro-Hester For The Saints threads. I would love to have him anywhere from round 5 to 7. But a 3rd round pick?! Is Kiper smoking crack, or does he know something that we don't? Hester in the 3rd round is a very bold statement, even for Kiper. Thoughts anyone?

Yes, that is a bold statement. All Kiper is now-a-days is a hype/ratings man. Someone give him a white towel to helicopter around his head.

Hester will change the FB position. He will be a pass oriented FB who can get more than 3 yards a catch. He can be a guy who can run 10 yards and catch. He is fast and will be a good west coast offense FB. Book it. I really think he is a value at FB in the 3rd. Remember Colston as a TE he slipped to the 7th.

For a draft this is supposedly so deep at RB, it blows my mind too. We have seen how hard it is for a proven RB to get picked up by another team, I can only imagine what it's going to be like for a college RB to get drafted. I see a rush on about 2-3 in the first two rounds, and then things should quiet down. Hester is NOT an every down back and will more than likely make his biggest impact on ST or as a third down option. In this draft, that spells 5-7 rounder to me. I'm no draft expert, but I will be very suprised to see him going before the 5th round.

Some of the reports I've read don't even have Hester listed on their top 30 RB's for the upcoming draft. Even IF he was on a list like that, that would mean that EVERY team would need to take a least one RB in one of the top three rounds for him to get selected in the third round. Sorry, but I just don't see it. Was he good at LSU....YES. I think he'll be the fourth or fifth Tiger selected in this draft....but not before the fifth round.

I think you may very well be right. Hester will probably will his way to become one hell of a player. I just hope that he doesn't go to the Bucs like Kiper suggests he might.

The Eagles might have an interest in him as they just lost Thomas Tapeh to free agency, and their offense is West Coast style....

I can see Hester going high to a team where he happens to be a great fit. He's not a great fit for the Saints because we have a very solid, if not great fullback already. But a team without a fullback who can catch, and who needs some help on special teams might rate Hester higher on their draft board than a team where there are already players in the spots where his versatile skills would fill more than one hole.

That's called a TE/FB hybrid. There have been a few of these and it's a growing trend. Someone who can do either position. If Hester were used properly he could be the poster child for this trend.

Oh and Colston was never on a TE. Not in college or on teams draft boards. The only reason that he was ever called a TE is because some of the same "draft specialists" that are spouting things off now didn't know what to do with him because he didn't attend the combine and declare himself a WR.

Nah--Hester is still good and Kiper is still a quack.

What's that saying about a blind pig?
