Latavius Murray (1 Viewer)

After watching the Vikings get gashed by Tevin Coleman why was Murray not used more in a ball control offense especially with Kamara not effective? For as great of an offensive mind Sean has he certainly has done blunders as a coach.
Probably bc Payton rather stick to his plan than adjust to what obviously works- bc he sees that as admitting he was wrong

Payton has always been a pass first coach. He's not going to change and wishing he would do so is an exercise in futility. If he were to leave the Saints, he take the same approach with him wherever he went because that's who he is.

Yes, I wish he'd change.

You guys have to realize something. Drew Brees is very responsible for the play calling. You can see it even more so that we saw another QB win with a balanced gameplan under SP. Brees likes to audible and Kamara is a better pass catcher. So, it allows Brees to audible more with Kamara. The running back on the field has a lot to do with QB fit. Brees feels better with a check down to Kamara than Murray, because he is a timing and trust player. If Teddy was the QB, I’m putting house money on Murray getting a good amount of carries.

Attacking the Vikings’ secondary made sense. They had injuries. But give Zimmer credit. He anticipated that and they took advantages of a banged up Peat to create pressure up the middle which is Brees’ kryptonite. Payton did take too long to adjust. By the time they did the Vikings were up and we go to OT where the offense never even got to touch the ball.

Because this is how the 49ers are built. They run the ball a ton, especially to the perimeter.

Also, Murray isn't exactly Emmitt Smith.

As I said in the gameday thread, at 12:30 left in the 2nd quarter, Mostert already had 5 carries, the same number that Murray had for the entire game.

Then 30 seconds into the 2nd half, the 49ers as a team had 16 designed rushing attempts, the same number that we had for the entire game Sunday. That's not even including their 2 QB sneaks.

As it stands now with 11 minutes left in the game:
  • Coleman - 19 carries, 82 yards, 2 TD, 4.3 YPC
  • Mostert - 12 carries, 58 yards, 0 TD, 4.8 YPC
Write that down, Payton.

Two things can be true:

1. We should have ran the ball more.

2. The O Line that showed up for us Sunday would have NOT been as great opening holes consistently for our running backs like the 49ers are doing for there's.

True. But why not explore running/alternating Murray & Washington and Kamara in the slot.

We had the formula for winning football when Teddy was the QB. Once Brees got back it all changed. We were a very different team whether it’s Sean’s play calling or Brees changing the play at the line.

Didn't need the line to open them as good as SF is opening them, Murray was averaging 4.2 YPC and Taysom averaged 12.5 YPC (he still averaged 7.3 YPC even if you take out his 28 yard run).

We just needed to feed the right RB's and Payton failed to do that.
