Quote:

"When asked if anything was happening with talks with the Saints, tackle Jermon Bushrod said via text message late Wednesday night, “Not that I know of. Just trying to patiently wait.”
It's looking more and more like the Saints will allow Bushrod, their top unrestricted free agent, to test the market rather than trying to sign him to a long-term deal before other teams can talk to players' agents March 9"

Hope we can keep him, not sure if we can find a cheaper yet productive alternative to him, sorta like we did with Nicks in finding Grubbs, he was cheaper and sorta equal.

It's the one thing that is a bit frustrating about Loomis' strategy. He tends to wait until the very last minute on big contracts to try and get something done (i.e. Colston, Nicks, Brees...). I guess he feels it evens the playing field and shortens the timeframe for back and forth.

We are held hostage by Will Smith, Vilma and Harpers' contracts. No room on the cap.
I'm sure Loomis is doing a ton of behind the scenes work right now that is not being reported. What will be most frustrating is if he gets signed by someone else, and then Harper/Smith/Vilma restructure after the fact.

I don't think Bushrod deserves huge money. He's not a top ten tackle. He's above average though. Someone will pay him out of desperation.

I agree with the Loomis sentiment. Great cap GM but at times it appears, at least to me, some form of communication would be a better course of action. But....what do I know.

I don't know that I agree with this.

The Brees negotiations were long ongoing and that was held up by Condon, not Loomis.

Carl Nicks was asking for more than we were going to pay and Loomis had made what Nicks himself called a "fair offer." And we had Grubbs signed 20 seconds after Nicks signed in Tampa.

Colston was signed surprisingly fast last year and for less than we all thought he was going to get.

As it pertains to Bushrod, he is what many consider the 7th best free agent tackle on the market right now and there are still two days left until his agent can talk to any other teams. I don't think Loomis has dropped the ball, especially if you consider the Vilma/Smith/Harper talks that are ongoing to see what is what with our cap future. Letting Bushrod see what the market holds could be a good thing and if he walks, there are at least 6 other guys who are as good, if not better than him, who we will be offering what Loomis already has projected for Bushrod.

My opinion is Loomis is keeping everybody in play and everybody guessing. He loses leverage when or if he comes to an agreement with Smith, Vilma or Bushrod before free agency. He is comfortable being at the cap.

Who are the 6?

How do you assume Condon kept the Brees negotiations going long? Brees himself expressed frustration that there had been no communication from Loomis. Nicks consistently complained that he had not heard from the Saints and did not get an offer until the night before free agency. There was no talk about Colston at all until the day or 2 before free agency. Colston's could have been going on for a while as we did not hear from Colston. However, Brees and Nicks both expressed frustration about communication. Regardless, it has seemed to work fine more often than not.
