You have prospects you like and guys you’re not too familiar with, and prospects you’re not keen on...

Then the Saints draft goes like this...

1. Paulson Adebo, CB, Stanford: Adebo was at one time considered among the very best CBs in the entire class. There was also some buzz about him catching traction and entering the end of the 1st round discussion. He was still widely considered a 2nd rounder. Saints grab him at 28, and I don’t think it goes over like the fart in church that Payton Turner did. The top CBs were gone, and with Adebo’s size and skill set, this pick could’ve been more easily justified.

2. Pete Werner, LB, OSU: I personally loved this pick and I think Werner was an excellent pick here. Regardless, he’s at least solid and fills a need.

3. Payton Turner, DE, Houston: Turner would have been regarded as a huge value/steal at this point.

4. Trill Williams, DB, Syracuse: Williams was widely viewed as a versatile DB and Day 3 pick. His Pro Day wasn’t great, but he made a bunch of plays in games... and versatility is lagniappe. Saints double-down at DB.

6. Landon Young, OT, Kentucky: We all knew OL was coming. Saints take a 6th round flier on an experienced LT from the SEC. Some folks woulda been mad, but it would make sense (pre-draft).

7. Stevie Scott, RB, Indiana: Saints take a flier on a physical power RB with a 7th rounder. Watch Scott’s highlight video and you feel even better.

...Then they get Ian Book as an UDFA and fill out the rest of the UDFAs with Kawaan Baker included...

Before any of these past 3 days... I would’ve felt pretty good about that. Just sayin.

As long as you can get that 3rd and 7th round pick back then yeah.

But they can't.
 
On the surface, it wasn’t a sexy draft, but it looks like we got some real football players with great size, good athleticism, high motors, and high IQ. The more I look at it, the more I like the draft picks as a whole. I'm sure not every one of them will be stars, but that's how it goes for every team every year.

Would he not then been a good pick for another team?

Well said. At the end of the day as long as players turn out good where they were drafted will be a moot point. Talking heads will just discuss how smart the team that picked the player was and how other teams missed.

Every year these draft drama threads pop up complaining about where/when guys were picked.

I remember this board hated the Kamara pick

I remember this board hated the Michael Thomas pick

I remember people hated the Ryan Ram pick.

The only pick for me that was really a head-scratcher was Book. I'm ok with the others. Turner only played five games at DE and had five sacks and a ton of pressures and was compared to Cam Jordan by Brett Kollman (who does some great film studies). Freakish athleticism for a really big dude. Adebo was being talked up as a potential first-rounder before the 2020 NCAA season. Werner could go either way, but a lot of pro comparisons had him as being closest to Fred Warner of the 49ers, so I've got a lot of hope that he and DD can be a scary duo. Book...I don't get it. And that's looking at him in a vacuum; not comparing him to who was still available. Great intangibles, but the measurables aren't there. Yeah, he's similar in size and leadership to Brees, but Brees is Brees.
 
This is actually a very interesting take - the OP’s reordering would’ve been much better accepted than their actual draft. You could actually substitute their 6th and 7th picks with a few of the UDFAs (Williams, Soehner, Scott) without complaint.

Trill Williams was considered a Day 2 prospect by some and at least a Day 3 pick by the others.
His write up from The Draft Network is very encouraging, and although he has experience play FS, Slot CB, and outside CB.. TDN thinks his best fit would as an outside/boundary CB. Here you go:

Williams’ athletic testing numbers hurt his stock I’ve read, but he plays fast and physical.

The DL from Washington also could’ve easily been a late round flier.
 
Bryce Thompson is another interesting UDFA CB......decent size and speed. He probably would have drafted except for his HUGE baggage of domestic abuse charges. I’m sure he’s on the shortest leash ever with the Saints. If he so much as sneezes in the wrong direction he’ll be gone. But if he can stay out of trouble and has a good camp he’s another guy that has a shot at making the team.
 
I participate in only one FFL league, now (used to be several every season). It’s a fun, less serious family/friends group. Not a bunch of obsessed die-yards. After the draft, Yahoo, grades your draft and some take it more to heart than they should. I tell them if they want to win the pre-season draft grade, use Yahoo’s player rankings and draft their best available on the list (chalk). You’ll be the king of the draft every year.

Reminds me of the OP’s premise.

Drafting Adebo combined with signing Trill Williams as an UDFA makes me feel better about Carolina drafting Jaycee Horn instead of us. If Adebo isn’t ready to fill in at CB2, Williams seems like he can with less pressure if he has to.

And even though they’re both rooks, Adebo and Williams is a lot better tandem than PJ/P-Rob for when Lattimore serves a 2-5 game suspension. These two additions keeps PJ and P-Rob in their natural positions as nickel and dime corners. Very underrated additions right now and great job by the Saints FO for filling the hole at CB during and after the draft

If Latt faces a 1-2 game suspension, I 100% expect P-Rob to fill in for him. P-Rob can be very effective is short stretches.
The additions of these 2 youngsters gives the Saints a shot at striking gold and getting a viable long-term starter though.

I still expect the Saints to sign another vet CB as well.
 
Fans get upset because they value players like car salesmen value cars. Any number of online car pricing sites (draft guides) will tell you what a car is worth. However, the value is in the eye of the beholder (team).

But that's all fantasy. Our GM, coach, and staff are just as informed as any other team. And they like these guys better than the other options on the board at the time of the pick.

Well said. The draft coverage went from Mel Kiper and a few draft magazines to this multi million dollar money making machine. But when you get right down to it, it's just entertainment. The only people who really know are in those war rooms.

That doesn't mean the fans can't be right or that the pros can't be wrong. The draft will always be a crap shoot. It's just that these teams have mountains of information that we don't and that gives them a better idea of how a player will turn out.
