Let the franchise tagging begin. (1 Viewer)

And the title of this thread renders 60% of the threads over the past 2 months obsolete...

Looks like we'll be fighting for overpriced 2nd tier players and trying to draft some 1st year studs.

On the bright side, there's a couple OG's we can go after and this probably makes Fairley a little more of a critical rehire. Who knows? Maybe we win the Perry sweepstakes.

Wow. The Steelers signed Antonio Brown for $17 million per year. They tagged Leveon Bell for over $12 million. They will have over $50 million in three offensive players this year with Big Ben. What does that leave the Lines of Scrimmage, LBs, DBs.

And as someone pointed out, the contracts being signed now and the Tags are driving the price of FAs way out of value context. I tend to think we may make a few big signings instead of a bunch of over-priced mid-tier FAs. Fleener will look like a steal after this season and that's scary

Well scratch Melvin Ingram off our list. He is tagged.

Simply stated the Saints have no players worthy of the tag right now. That could change easily in 2017.

The signings aren't that far out of place when you consider the cap has gone up 50% over the last 10 years. Players you used to think of as 7-8M players are now 12-14M players.

People assumed that teams could afford to sign a larger number of good players when the cap kept rising. In reality, it just means the better players get paid more.

I just wonder how he will do when everybody is looking at him to be the man after his big contract. It was a sincere question though. Was just curious about your thought process. I think he is really good, but I'll have to wait until I see what he does next year before I say he's better than Norman.

I think he is the next Norman. Both had great contract years but before that were virtually unknown. My only worry is Crennel and Houston's overall defense had a lot to do with his ascension. Too many teams have a ton of money and with all of these guys getting tagged he could be the #1 free agent. Just take a look at this list; all of the guys except Cousins, who will be traded or tagged, have been franchised ahead of AJ. At this point we should focus on re signing Fairley even though I love AJ and I'm not a big Gilmore fan.

1. Kirk Cousins (28) -- Currently sixth all time in passing yards per game. Likely to get tagged again.
2. Chandler Jones (27) – Double-digit sacks in three of last four years. Almost certain to get tagged.
3. Jason Pierre Paul (28) -- One of NFL's most complete defensive ends. G-Men badly want him back.
4. Kawann Short (28) -- Do-all 4-3 defensive tackle. Panthers fully expected to franchise tag Short.
5. Eric Berry (28) – Takeaway specialist shuts down TEs. Says he won’t play on franchise tag again.
6. A.J. Bouye (25) – Ascending shutdown corner was PFF’s No. 6 coverage CB out of 120 last year.
7. Melvin Ingram (27) – Only Von Miller, Khalil Mack had more QB hurries among 3-4 OLBs in ’16.
8. Alshon Jeffery (27) – Type-A No. 1 WR with availability concerns. Still a lock to break the bank.
9. Brandon Williams (28) – This year’s Damon Harrison. Dominant run-stopping two-down nose.
10. Le’Veon Bell (25) – Deserves to become the NFL’s highest-paid back, but likely to get tagged.
11. Trumaine Johnson (27) – Rare size for CB (6’2/204). No. 2 free agent corner behind A.J. Bouye.
12. Stephon Gilmore (26) – Gilmore is this year’s Janoris Jenkins. Supreme talent but inconsistent.
13. Calais Campbell (30) – Finished third among 3-4 DEs in tackles for loss (12), second in sacks (8).
14. Terrelle Pryor (27) – Went 77-1,007-4 in first season at WR. Browns say Pryor won’t be tagged.
15. Kevin Zeitler (27) – Top-ten guard in PFF’s ratings three straight years. Expected to leave Cincy.

Hightower looks unlikely to get tag or extension. He'd be a great addition to the D. No idea if we can fit him and Bouye both, but man that'd be incredible. Those moves, along with getting an affordable G and drafting edge talent early/often would turn our D around as fast as NYG did last year.

I think it's possible, but I wouldn't be the team to find out if Bouye is the next big thing.

He's now poised to be the highest paid FA on the market, probably at over 14m a year. He didn't even become a starter until October of last year. And he did so on a team stacked with front 7 talent.

I think he'll stay. The Patriots have plenty of cap space they have to spend anyway and he's too important to their defensive success. They let McCourtey waffle and eventually signed him to a massive deal.

Really good points. Thx Liter

If the Saints franchise tag a player it guarantees that he can't be signed by another team without the Saints receiving compensation (2 first round picks). On the flip side that player is guaranteed a 1 year salary from the Saints equal to the average yearly salary of the top 5 players at the position or 120% of their salary in 2016, whichever is greater.

The Saints do not have any unrestricted free agents this year that any team would give up 2 first round picks to acquire nor any the Saints would pay that much salary to keep. Therefore, there is no need for tagging.

Thank you for the explanation!
