Recently started playing at least twice per week. Very addciting game!! Anyone have some good reviews on courses in the South Mississippi and Greater New Orleans area? Looking to get out and play some different courses with the wife and brother in law.

Any courses that I MUST check out from your experiences?

Can't help you with the courses. It's been too long since I lived in the area. BUT nobody I know has ever been able to play golf with their wife without it causing problems.

Golf is supposed to be an excuse to get away from the wife!!!!!!

I don't mind playing golf with my wife every now and then. But no way could I do it all the time. I have found playing with women really slows down the play time, no matter what their skill level. Plus it is nice to just get out with the guys, drink, smoke, talk about women, you know dude stuff.

On the Mississippi Gulf Coast, try any of the casino related courses. The casinos have enough money to keep their courses in pretty good condition. If you gamble, you can usually join the player's club with the casino and get free rounds at the golf courses.

I have played The Bridges in Bay St. Louis many, many times. Good course, but bring extra balls. Built on marsh and wetland areas, any stray balls - forget about them (unless you really want to get up close and personal with alligators and snakes). The course was designed by Arnold Palmer.

The Oaks in Pass Christian is a nice course, not related to any casino. The beverage cart is sponsored by Hooters and the girl driving the cart is an employee of Hooters (uniform and all). This is one golf course I usually buy waaaay too many drinks.

If you like camping and golfing, try Flint Creek in Wiggins, MS (about 30 to 40 minutes north of Gulfport). I have spent many weekends camping with the family and playing at Pine Burr Country Club. It's open to the public and inexpensive. Lots and lots of hills, which something you may not be use to in Southern Louisiana.

Hope this helps!

You can always try:

Oak Harbor Nice course. Feels long but it's nice

http://www.covingtoncountryclub.com/ Nice course with good fairways and greens to hit from. Friendly set up I would say. Fun.

If you know a member at Beau Chene Country Club in Mandeville, play with them. They have 2 courses and both are phenomenal. It feels like TPC level but they have very nice fairways, tee setups, greens bunkers etc. Find a member!

Must plays on the MS Coast are The Bridges, The Oaks, Windance, The Grand Bear, Shell Landing, and the Preserve. The Bear is my favorite and probably the best course for the money, especially with their $40 summer rate. However, I did play Windance on Friday and its in the best shape I ever seen it in. I'm playing the Preserve tomorrow. They've had issues with their greens in the past. This will be the first time I've played it in over two yrs. I'll give you a report tomorrow. The Oaks in Pass Christian is another great value.

Mid tier courses would be Sunkist, Gulf Hills, Hickory Hills. Lower tier would be Dogwood Hills, Pass Christian Isles, Pine Burr, Great Southern. I haven't played Diamonhead in quite a while but the last time I played it, it wasn't terrible.

Played The Preserve today. Still lacking on their greens. Never seen a top dollar course struggle so much with their greens. But their fairways might be the best on the MS Gulf Coast.

This U.S. Open is turning into an epic battle. Lefty just eagled the 10th to take the lead and right after Justin Rose birdied to get back even.
