There has been a lot of political speculation, but I think the season cost us Sean Payton. I understand that it might be for political reasons. However, I can’t rule out that the season burned out Sean. Many threads refer to the adversity the Saints faced last season. At the risk of being whiny, it might be interesting to gather all the issues into one thread.
1. Hurricane, with the disruption it caused, including displacement, destroying of routine, etc.
2. Winston injury, leading to playing 4 starting QBs.
3. 57 different starters.
4. Covid game, with players from the street being fitted for uniforms just before the game.
5. Lutz injury, leading to the kicker carousel.
I separate Winston and Lutz injuries from the rest because they are specialists. You can't just plug and play or next man up those positions.
6. No Brees. It's difficult to recover from the loss of a HoF QB and leader.
I exclude Covid because every team had to deal with that.
7. Harris/Harty suspension.
8. No CGM. That was unexpected. That injury is separate because it went on for 2 years.
That is a lot of stuff to overcome. Yet the Saints won 9 games.
Add some others that I forgot about. It's already a rather staggering list.
I think Sean had to recover, after this past season.
