I always wondered why running backs were allowed to do this.

NOOOO! dont ban stiff arms! deuce is the man at it!

and friend and i always called him "Deuce Lee" because of the way he would chop a stiff arm on defenders with the quickness. even when his helmet got ripped off, deuce stiff armed and kept moving forward while heading for the sideline.

Getting rid of a move like the stiff arm would be really dumb. It is iconic, especially if you ask a running back. Don't give me, ":they can still use it, just not to the face" That's like saying you can still eat the hamburger, you just can't use your hands.

I understand the grabbing and twisting, that is a facemask, I like how they got rid of the 5-yard penalty, but do not get rid of the stiff arm!!

I always wondered why it was OK for the ballcarrier to do it, btu illegal for the defender to even touch the facemask... LT ripped the guy from StLou's helmet off... I like the rule... the offense has too many rules to help them.

You can tackle a guy by the head or helmet. That's not the issue. The issue is the face mask, and the dangers inherent in twisting the facemask.

How many players have been injured due to a stiffarm? I would say all told, zero, in the entire history of football. It's always been illegal for a runner to grab the tacklers facemask in any way.

This is absolutely and idiotic rule. It's inconsistent with the the other rules in place.

You can't ban a move that is so grounded in football tradition that it has its own button on Madden! whats next? the juke and/or the spin move??

I always wondered why running backs were allowed to do this.

It's been allowed in football since day 1. A good stiffarm is a great skill, and fun to watch. If they take it away, it further dilutes the great game of football.

The Heisman trophy statuette is in a stiffarm position. May as well put a ballet dancer on the trophy.

most ridiculous rule ever...the stiff arm is a staple of the NFL and in every highlight of every all time great RB you can see a classic stiff arm, how can you outlaw something like that

You used to be able to clothesline people too, doesn't mean it was a good rule.

Yea I would say some of the better backs in the NFL try to do both. Deuce will try going around someone but does not always have the speed to so he uses the stiff arm to his advantage. Walter Peyton had a great stiff arm so did Emit. They would do both and maybe in the same play.

90% of the time Reggie will try to go around.

90% of the time Bettis would try to go over you.

They both used the stiff arm but not very often, at least not as much as the other backs.

Walter Payton's favorite move used to be to pull his forearm back and just before a defender would go to tackle him, swing it forward like a baseball bat, hitting the guy just below his helmet or in the upper part of the chest... it was awesome to see.

Larry Czonka is the only offensive player during an offensive play, to receive an unnecessary roughness penalty for striking a defender to hard when the defender was trying to tackle him.

If I'm not mistaken, isn't this considered a "classic" move by oh say....EVERYONE that has EVER played football?? I guess they'll want to go and change this little trohpy around....not really a big deal, right?

and one of my favorites (53 second mark)
NFL Game Center: Post Game - Philadelphia Eagles at San Francisco 49ers - 2006 Week 3

You used to be able to clothesline people too, doesn't mean it was a good rule.

Again, that was an injury concern for starters.

As I've already stated, you can already tackle a guy by the head or helmet. You just can't grab the facemask, or the edge of the helmet. A defender can push a runner down by the helmet, and you can push on the facemask as long as you don't grab it.

The stiffarm is legitimate under the rules, and there is no injury concern. None at all.
