It would hurt any team to lose a strong safety, pressure player and slot cornerback at the same time.
That’s what the Saints are losing with Kenny Vaccaro being suspended four games for testing positive for Adderall, which is classified as a performance enhancing drug by the NFL. The safety had appealed the suspension but dropped it on Friday ahead of Sunday’s game against the Buccaneers.
He will now miss the rest of the season and be clear to play at the start of next season.
There was never an advantageous time for this to happen, and at 5-7, it will be a big blow to any hope the team has of making the playoffs. It also brings a close to any hope of seeing this defense at full strength, after only getting brief glimpses here and there.
All season we’ve wondered how things might look with cornerback Delvin Breaux, defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins and linebacker Dannell Ellerbe back at full strength. Rankins and Ellerbe have made a major difference, and Breaux is starting to settle in after suffering a broken fibula Week 1.
