I know we have a couple of threads relating to the flood - but the titles aren't that clear and I wanted to have a place to talk about relief efforts and what those of us, like me, who are Louisianians living elsewhere and just looking to help. The whole thing is so heartbreaking.

There are many relief efforts underway. Many ways to help. Post them here.

If you are in the area looking to help families with gutting and rebuilding their homes but you don't know where to start, PM me, I know a group that is out there doing that.

Also, if you are looking to make a donation and wish for something more local rather than through the usual channels like the Red Cross, consider the efforts of the Louisiana Conference of the Methodist Church. A friend of mine is helping lead their effort to supply impacted families with clean-up and shelter. Louisiana Conference: How To Help

Feel free to merge this, but we should adjust one of the titles to indicate that it is for flood and flood-relief discussion.

:plus-un2:

Get involved folks. 75% ( estimated ) were without flood insurance.

There is no time to debate whether or not they should have had. Its costly, its infrequent and totally unexpected ( this event). So the one thing we can do as Louisianians is continue to "pay it forward" as bclemms wrote in his post - its what he misses most about La.

as an FYI....companies are charging $3-6 per square foot to "demo, apply microban and dry " interior of homes. so for a 1500 sq ft home, thats $4500 to $9000 ! These people ( uninsured ) cant afford that. And shouldnt. We have enough able bodied people that can spare a weekend and get thru 2-3 homes.

we ( 8 guys ) will be in Walker this weekend doing just this. I would love to know that 20 more from just this board will show up in that area looking to do the same.

There is no doubt that the one of the more redeeming qualities about South Louisianians is our propensity to give someone the shirt off our back - to hold up our neighbor when they need it, to be a friend.

There are many folks out there that need it at this time. If you cannot find the time to donate, then any little bit helps.

thanks chuck for posting this thread.

I and the St. Benilde Men's Club (Metairie) will be bringing our jambalaya team to St Thomas Moore Catholic Church 11441 Goodwood Blvd for dinner on Thursday Aug. 18. If you are in the area come get a good meal and take a few back for later. We hope to feed 700 - 900 meals to anyone and everyone in need, as well as hungry responders. Spread the word and come see us Thursday afternoon/evening.

I'm too far away to do anything hands on. I just shared the idea of giving on my Facebook page and I donated a bit to Catholic Charities.
