Pressboxers and fans assumed the Saints´ offensive line would be a joke this season.
When the New Orleans professionals reported for training camp in Jackson in late July, most looked at the roster and shook their heads. The offensive line was suspect at best on a team that was coming off a 3-13 record. Fans feared for Deuce McAllister, who was coming back from ACL surgery. Ditto Drew Brees, who was coming off shoulder surgery and wasn´t throwing deep yet.
Yet, a patchwork offensive line that had to be put together early in camp because injuries to two projected starters has really been the biggest surprise -- not the weakest link -- during the club´s magical 5-1 start. And they have done it with new starters at all five positions.
