Louisville WR Coach & Super Bowl MVP Deion Branch on Tyler Shough (3 Viewers)

I just hope fans' expectations aren't so out of kilter no one gives him a chance too struggle and learn.

Again, Aikman was terrible his rookie year, then went on to be a Hall of Fame QB. Peyton Manning didn't light the league on fire as a rookie. Drew Brees was so unmemorable the Chargers were already planning to replace him as he went into his second year with them, and despite his improvement that year drafted his replacement after that second year.

Look, it would be great if he came in and had a year like Burrow or JD5, but those are rare exceptions. Here's hoping he or Rattler (I don't really care which) turn into a force to be reckoned with and become the offensive spearhead of Super Bowl winning teams for us. But it's not happening this year...

And after the draft I've not some to realize the front office - Loomis and our new coach - knew exactly what they were doing with the 9 pick and Shough.

In whatever combo we end up with on OL with Ruiz, Penning, Banks and Fuaga we are going to be able to run and pass protect.
Agreed!

Provided they’re all healthy going into the regular season, I know some may disagree, but for now I have:

Banks LT

Penning LG

McCoy C

Ruiz RG

Fuaga RT

We’ll see!

And Joe Burrow was 2-7-1 with a torn ACL his rookie season. Zak Taylor could have (should have) been fired for malpractice. I'm not sure why Burrow gets brought up as a successful rookie.

No one w/the team or pro football experience has said that Penning would be suitable at G. The ONLY place where people project Penning at G is Saints Report. There have been more that postulated that Banks will play LG, w/everybody else in the positions as last year. There is precedent of having the rookie play G, before switching to T in his 2nd year. That would be more likely to field a better OL. If Penning continues to make strides @ RT, the team would be in a really good place for '26, but if not, could still make a switch @ both T spots.

The consensus is Penning at T but it's not *just* Saintsreport where that speculation has occurred. Going back to the draft, there was some talk about his potential to play inside.

However, Daniel Jeremiah of NFL Network thinks Baltimore should consider drafting Penning, even if All-Pro left tackle Ronnie Stanley is healthy next season and Morgan Moses takes over at right tackle. Jeremiah said Penning is versatile enough to start at left guard next season.

"He got some guard reps at the Senior Bowl and did just fine," Jeremiah said on “The Lounge” podcast. "I know a lot of times you say you don't want a real tall guard. This guy is big and powerful. He can play with a lot of leverage.
"I think Trevor Penning can slide in there and hold up. You wouldn't have to play him there long-term. I don't think Morgan Moses is the long-term solution.

I think you're probably right about how it will go, in part because Penning could be in his final season here, and keeping him where he's been might be the smoothest short term plan. I won't be surprised if the new staff takes a look at him inside, though, out of due diligence, since they've talked about getting the five best linemen on the field, wherever they end up slotted.

He's got 2 games to show he's the next Drew Brees. And not even, "good for a rookie", "Drew Freaking Brees in his prime" good, or the hate is going to come out.

I'm not expecting a stellar 1st season. If he has one, great. I'm in this long term. He's legit!!

I read and article yesterday that said the NFL personnel were surprised that Shough went at 40, that's where many teams had him and he wouldn't have lasted much longer.

He was a late riser which is why the Draft Media and fans weren't tracking him, but the NFL was.

Also, there was no room for another QB in the mix with the Cam Ward 0 Start to 1st overall story, the Jaxson Dart story and the fabricated false narrative about Sanders being at Top 3 pick.

Because he was….

Almost 3K yards passing 13 TDs to 5 INTS before getting hurt. In over half his games played he threw for 300+ yards, including one for over 400 yards. The offensive line was horrible, the defense was terrible, but anyone that watched Joe his rookie year and didn’t see he was the truth, well, they just weren’t really watching.

Don’t get me wrong, there was plenty to improve on. However, every NFL employee and anyone watching knew they had a big time stud at that position.

Sad to say, that's not how [most] fans work. The majority will see even legitimate reasons for struggles as excuses that must be corrected now. And for many their answers to the issues are ridiculous and have no real chance for success. There's nothing wrong with being a little critical of a veteran squad & staff. But we have the exact opposite of that right now. If they cannot adopt a little patience with the team at this stage, they never will.

Now that the Carr situation is over it seems apparent that Shough will be Moore's guy. The other two will get their chance to win it but it's Shough's to lose. I think you roll with him and see what you have to see if you have to invest in this position again next year.
