Story:

LSU’s live tiger mascot, Mike VI, has been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, and his life expectancy varies from a few months to one to two years, depending on treatment, officials said.

Mike was diagnosed with spindle cell sarcoma after his veterinarian, David Baker, and veterinary student caretakers noticed swelling on the right side of Mike’s face, the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine said in a news release. On May 12, the tiger was sedated in his night house and brought to the school for an examination and diagnostic tests.

The tests, which were reviewed by multiple specialists, found that Mike has a tumor in his face near his nose, the news release said. It was identified as spindle cell sarcoma, a malignant and “extremely rare” form of cancer, LSU said. The cancer is unlikely to spread to other areas of the body.

Specialists at LSU and around the country have put together a treatment plan, which consists of a radiation therapy called “stereotactic radiotherapy,” LSU said. The treatment is “not curative, but should extend Mike’s life and allow him to live comfortably for some time,” LSU said.
According to the article: with treatment, he is expected to live another one to two years. Without treatment, he would be expected to live one to two months.

It's not looking good for Mike VI. :(

LSU's live bengal tiger mascot, Mike VI, continues his battle with cancer, and the most recent update from LSU said his condition has grown worse.

On Wednesday morning, LSU released a statement that said Mike's tumor has resumed growth and spread. He was anesthetized and taken to the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine on Monday for a CT scan, which revealed the growth of the tumor in his head.

It's nice to see him receive quality medical care and fantastic living conditions.

I'm hopefuly he can be treated to recovery but if not, I hope LSU is successful in finding a replacement.

Once a cancer starts tossing mets to other organs, it's almost always game over, so Mike unfortunately doesn't have much time left. He is getting world class care so he won't suffer... Sad news though...

Yeah, I think it's time to put him down. It sucks though, but better than him suffering more than he should. I too hope LSU can find a good replacement. Those tigers are amazing animals.

I read where they were going to let him stay in the habitat until he struggles further with his strength. At that time, they'll take him and humanely euthanize him.

I obviously never "met" him; but I dunno, I just felt a particular affinity for Mike VI. I remember his debut in Tiger Stadium (VERY skittish) but I always loved when they'd show him swimming in his habitat. Seemed like he spent a LOT of time in the "pool". This saddens me but inevitable given his diagnosis back in May.

Mike IV has moved to hospice care. I suspect we'll learn of his euthanizing later this week.

RIP Mike VI.

You were a loyal and tremendous friend to the community and university.

I think this pic is appropriate, in two LSU legends have now moved on. Mike on to tiger heaven and Les on to his next challenge. Thanks to both!!
