I was very impressed with how much improvement he showed last year. He was mainly in as the other MLB in our odd fronts and the game seems to have slowed down for him a bit.

There are some guys on here who know a good bit more than I about the individual assignments of different positions, so my question to ya'll is this: Does Marvin Mitchell merit consideration for the starting SLB position? Mitchell, Vilma, Casillas - it's already 75% of our 3-4 LB corps, why not just try him out at SLB for the 4-3?

Too inconsistent. Jumps offsides a lot, misses assignments not a real discipline player. I wouldn't want him starting

Mitchell has obviously the size at 6-3, 249.

He was a monster on goal line stands, and it seems to me he was fine on coverage when playing under the 3-4 formation. I am not sure how effective he can be blitzing. He had one sack last year.

I hope he can claim the SAM position, but I wonder if he has the athletic ability to do so, and also, if the staff is really interested on moving him.

Let's not forget, Marvin is Vilma's back-up, he will be quarterbacking the defense in case, God forbid, something happens to Vilma. And that is a very important position.

Jo-Lon Dumbar was also a MIKE in college, so I think the staff should consider which is more valuable at what position, considering that chances are one be the starting SAM and the other the back-up MIKE.

If we ever switch to 3-4 full time I'd love to have him as our starter. I just don't think that he's fast enough on the outside to move him to sam and he is also to stiff in space.

I'd really prefer to keep mitchell as vilma's primary backup at this point. My confidence has grown in him tremendously.

I think this is how I feel as well, just wanted to pose the question and see what the board thinks.

It certainly appears that he would be a decent 2-down interior LB, but I can't see him starting at the SAM. He has been a core STer too, which adds to his value.

Most of the individuals on the defensive unit had disappointing seasons, but Mitchell and Malcolm Jenkins were probably 2 of the most improved players from 2009 to 2010 season.

I remember someone posting an article from Gregg Williams saying that he was very smart and athletic and that Gregg really liked him. I'm pretty sure with our short comings at SLB that GW is smart enough to say hey, lets see if Mitchell can play SLB in training camp. If not then maybe GW isn't the defensive genius we all think he is.
