The Las Vegas Raiders have fired general manager Mike Mayock after three seasons and will begin a search for a coach and GM following their second playoff berth in the past 19 seasons.

The Raiders announced the move to get rid of Mayock on Monday, two days after losing their wild-card playoff game to Cincinnati 26-19.

“We thank Mike for his contributions over the last three years in helping to form the foundation for the franchise to build upon in its future,” the team said in a statement.

The Raiders have already made a request to interview Patriots director of player personnel Dave Ziegler for the general manager job, as well as Patriots assistant Jerod Mayo for head coach, according to a person familiar with the request. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team didn’t make the requests public.
Mayock was so much better as a draft analyst than he was as an actual GM. No idea how he could waste so many 1st round picks and have little to nothing to show for it.

I don't think you can put Ruggs killing someone on Mayok. Now Clelin Ferrell, that's on Mayok. Ferrell still may develop.

He's been pretty useless for the Raiders. They can do a lot better for GM. And, they need to keep the coach who got them to the playoffs.

Goes to show some people are better at a different job. Some are better coordinator than when they were a player. Some people are better as a player than they are a coordinator. Elway was a great player once but not so good as a GM.

Not surprised. There doesn't seem to be a great culture there. I was impressed with an interim coach keeping them winning with all the turbulence of their season. In true Raider fashion, they are looking for somebody else to coach their team. Doesn't make sense to me. I'd give that guy one season to see what he can do.

They have talent on their roster. They just need better coaching and discipline. I'm speaking of positional coaches.

He was great in later rounds. Renfrow Crosby etc but early rounds not so hot. However gruden is a hot head could have easily wanted Ferrell and leatherwood and had final say

Good luck collecting anything that's still owed to him on his contract with the Raiders. They are tight with the dollars. Anything left on his contract will get paid in coins and casino chips which he will have to pick up in person at 3AM on a Sunday night.

I honestly don't believe this was performance related. I thought the guy had a solid tenure, and hit or miss on draft picks just like anyone else.

I believe this had more to do with team culture/leadership concerns more than anything. They likely just wanted a fresh start, and I could also see Mayock butting heads with people in the building often, namely, ownership.

The Josh Jacobs and Johnathan Abram first round selections in 2019 were really good. No one mentions the other two 1st round picks Raiders had that year. Missing on a top 5 pick is pretty bad, but Jacobs and Abram had Pro Bowl years 2019 and 2020 and looks like long term foundational players for their offensive and defensive backfields. With three 1st rounders in ‘19, those mostly make up for the Ferrell pick. If I had to guess, I’d say Ferrell pick was Gruden’s and the others were Mayock, since the HC would get his cant miss prospect first and the later picks in the first and rest of the draft would be more scouting.

Mayock did a decent job football-wise with rebuilding most of the team’s talent from scratch in 3 years and getting a playoff berth out of it in year 3. He should still be Raiders GM.

I dunno, Gruden had a lot of pull, probably as much if not more than Mayock. Hard to say who was responsible for what.
