METAIRIE — Considering they’re both from Miami, it’s not surprising to learn that Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson and New Orleans Saints cornerback Mike McKenzie have a mutual respect for each other.
Even though they were born two years apart, McKenzie was a senior at Norland High School when Johnson was a sophomore at Miami Beach High, they often spend time together when they return home each offseason.
“He’s a pretty cool guy,” McKenzie said of Johnson and their hometown ties. “He and I do stuff with (local recreation) teams in the offseason.”
Which may explain why the personable Johnson, who has a lot of fun needling opposing cornerbacks virtually every week of the season, was taking it easy on McKenzie on Wednesday as they prepared for their first on-field matchup Sunday in the Superdome.
