Mike Glennon (1 Viewer)

Whoever we groom needs to be, at the oldest, around 26-27 when they take the reigns. We want a QB who we can count on for years. Glennon wouldn't start for us until he was nearing 30, or even beyond that. The guy who will take Brees place needs to be 22-24 years old right now.

If the Texans had had any sense they would have given Tampa a 3rd for him last season. At least if he didn't work out they could have let him walk at the end of the season. Now they are stuck, unless they draft someone.

Although TD to INT ratio isn't half as meaningful as knowing his ability to read defenses and to execute passes past the line of scrimmage, he is 30 TD vs 15 INT over his (brief) career. When he has played he has consistently shown poise in the pocket and an ability to accurately throw when given time. A career % mark of just under 60% isn't ideal, but then he rarely was working with a competent group of skilled receivers and blockers. For reference, Teddy Bridgewater is 28 TD to 21 INT over a relatively similar workload (29 games for Bridgewater to 21 for Glennon).

I don't know if Glennon would particularly match the scheme that Payton has set up here, but he has shown that he can play in the NFL at a competitive level. Having seen the crapshoot that drafting QBs is I would be perfectly content if someone like Glennon was entrusted the reins to our future rather than an unknown rookie.

The short of it is whoever we "elect" to replace Brees will have very limited gametime if they are a QB we draft (by both necessity and plan); I am far more comfortable in dealing with a QB who has taken his lumps and still performed above replacement value.

Ahhh, Mike Glennon. From that rich lineage of back up QBs that people convinced themselves were "full of potential". Matt Cassel, Ryan Mallett, Matt Flynn and now Jimmy Garoppalo call you brother.

Nail on the head. Glennon isn't the guy to groom for after Brees. At best he's the one year bridge you have to throw in as a bottom tier starter because you didn't draft a guy to groom. You basically only play Glennon when you want to suck bad enough to earn a top 5 pick and get a real QB.

I watched him play at NC State and, to be honest, I was shocked he got drafted. I've never been impressed by him. But, who knows? I could be wrong.

A lot of people said the same thing about Tom Brady coming out of college. Seme players turn on the switch when they get proper NFL coaching. Glennon is one of them

And yet both the old and new coaching staff at TB were happy to move on from him...

I just don't see him as being our next starting quarterback. He's somewhere between backup and starter and I don't see that as being worth paying him as a backup for 2-3 years. I also don't feel we need to draft or sign our next quarterback this year. If the right opportunity/player presents itself, then I'm all for it, but taking a QB in the 2nd or 3rd round when there is so much defensive talent would be a mistake. We really NEED to draft DE, LB, CB and S in the first 4 rounds if it lines up as BPA or close to it.

What do y'all think about bringing in F.A. QB Mike Glennon?
I know coach really likes him.
I know Brees still has a couple of years left in him,
Would it be feesible to say we could groom Glennon for a couple of years until he can take over?
Do y'all think the price would be too high for essentially a back up right now?

Honestly, I wouldnt hate it at all. Glennon looked like he was developing okay until Greg Schiano got axed and the new regime came in and drafted Jamis. I remember hearing Payton saying he liked Glennon a lot and considered drafting him the year he came out. Depending on the numbers he's asking for, it wouldnt be a bad move.

8m a year? Well so much for that.

Nobody really knows how good he is. But it pretty likely he's at least a top 25-30 overall qb and will get a pretty nice contract to lead a team. He's basically the best available qb (for just a FA contract as JG from NE is gonna cost a team a 1st plus). He's obv way outta our league, and that's probably just as well.
