Just how 'religious fanatic' is he?

I'm undecided with who I'm going for. I tend to vote conservative but Obama is seeming pretty cool to me. I like his stance on lobbyists and stuff like that. I like McCain. I like Mike. Thompson seems a little too 'old guard' to go after alternative fuels and stuff like that that I like. Romney just seems sleezy, and I don't really like Rudy. Hillary is the worst of them all but I don't mind Edwards much.

So anyways, I like Huckabee but the whole 'evangelical Christian' thing is a negative. But I havn't seen him say anything about it. So is it the media and public blowing things out of proportions or is it REALLY that bad? I've even seen a post claiming he denounces evolution. A fact or someone stereotyping Christians since a good number of them DO believe in evolution?

Chuck Norris may be his running mate.

You might want to do a search on SR.com or Google. He's pretty hardcore and has some ties to nanny-state principles (national ban on smoking), but he seems like he's going to tell you what he believes in. That counts for something with me.

Huckabee has repeatedly denied belief in evolution and supported teaching creationism in Arkansas (but not from a federal level). He's easily the most socially conservative candidate in the race.

As a Christian conservative, I'm very uncomfortable with some of Huckabee's statements. While I'm among the first to say separation of church and state is not a constitutional commandment, I definitely don't want to see a melding of church and state.

It isn't. Most of the candidates are Christians. The difference is Huckabee doesn't shut up about being Christian. He acts as if he is more Christian than the other candidates and is trying to use religion for political gain. If you ask me it is pretty sick and unchristian.


He wants to get rid of the IRS and establish a flat tax. I love the idea but doubt it would ever happen under him. Less tax? Wow, why didn't he use this in Arkansas.

Huckabee was being smashed pretty good for using god about the time the political christmas commercials came out. Instead of using a cross in his Christmas commercial he decided to use a window with some interesting lighting to say the least.

Huckabee's son killed a dog at a summer camp by hanging it over a tree. I know this has nothing to do with Huckabee, until he tried to cover it up and used his political power to keep his son out of trouble.

Huckabee preaches about cutting government spending but in Arkansas he increased spending 220% during his tenure as Governor.

Huckabee has now started stealing pieces from Ron Paul's campaign. Calling it the Huckabee Revolution, talks about printing dollars (but doesn't get into specifics) and uses some of the same lines Paul has been using for quite some time, among other things.

Huckabee personally went to a parole board to urge for the release of a rapist. The rapist was released thanks to Huckster on the condition he moved out of state. The guy moved to Missouri then raped and murdered a woman.

Huckabee had 17 ethics violations while governor of Arkansas.

Huckabee has been real easy on illegal immigration while governor of Arkansas including giving scholarships to illegal aliens from state funded money.

Just a few weeks ago he made political ads throwing mud at Romney. The day the commercials were supposed to air he called a press conference to announce he wasn't going to air the ads and then showed the media which ads he wasn't airing so they could play them on the news for him. In other words he was out of money, tried to use the media for free press, tried to make himself look good for running attack ads and then showed the attack ads to the media so they could run them. This was in Iowa but now in South Carolina he thinks it is ok to run the same attack ads against Romney. Glenn Beck puts it best from his bedroom.

He carries a lot of dirty laundry and has pretty short political history. The reason you hear him bashed so much about his christian background is because he hasn't acted very christian.

Romney doesn't have the nearly as much dirt as Huckabee. He does have a long history of changing his positions every 4 years.

I dislike Romney because he is a born and bred politician. He is slick, has zero values, refuses to answer any question straight, bought clear channel radio and takes a lot of special interest money.

I would vote for Huckabee before I would Romney if someone had a gun to my head and those were my only two options.

Some opinions:

I think that he gets analyzed as a Christian more so because he is an ex-minister and he is put under that perspective/label as much by others than by himself, if not more. Being a Christian giving a message about the season during Christmas seems reasonable, and even a Christian subliminal symbol in the background can't be considered unreasonable even if a little funky.

The whole evolution thing is a personal preference that really does not affect his ability to govern, I think he even admits his beliefs but puts it on the margin. Likely half the country agrees with his position more or less anyway, or at the very least that half thinks the jury is still out on the topic.

Not everyone who is charming is by default fake.

Taking quotes out of a religious non-political sermon given to likeminded Christians at a Church seems unfair at best, considering he is a born-again ex-Baptist preacher. Now taking quotes from Hillary speaking in Church is something entirely different.

I understand that he went with the unanimous opinion of others involved in the decision making process of the parole mentioned, even so, it sucks that he did it and did not keep him in jail like the affected family requested.

Up here in Little Rock, the local super liberal "newspaper" was behind a lot of the accusations of ethics violations. I need to investigate if these 17 were accusations or actual convictions/found guilt.

My understanding is that a lot of tax increases were to cover things mandated by the legislature or the feds. Will need to investigate that further.

My gut feeling is there is a strong possibility he was weak on illegal immigration. Of course half the chicken processing in Arkansas, a huge industry, may be illegal, who knows.

He has a much longer political history than other candidates including Obama and Thompson. Ran a state for 10 years.

People need to realize if they don't like him because of his religiousity or they simply are not religious themselves and thus do not like religiousity, or both. Some who are not religious by default assume anyone religious is by default fanatical.

He is not shy or embarassed about his religiousity, but for some that makes him more legit understanding his value system, unlike other candidates. Some voters seem to want their political leaders to separate church and state in their own personal lives (if even possible) even if they would nonetheless separate the two in governing.

The guy is not a conservative's conservative by definition, and he does seem to be evolving or accentuating his positions on some issues that were not apparant before, seemingly by political motivation, but it might be worth some deeper investigation of the guy instead of just going with the headlines IMO.

Thanks guys. I was just trying to get a feel for it. To answer some questions:

I have nothing against Christians as I am one and it is the most important thing in the world to me. I DO, however, believe in evolution, as do most of my Catholic friends, and I honestly would have a little trouble voting for someone that denounces it. I'm sorry to anyone who does not believe in it but, to me, if you turn a blind eye to all of those facts than your must be turning a blind eye to a lot of other stuff, too.

I know that there are those people who hate everything religion and as soon as they hear someone is religious its all stereotyping and 'all they do is bad' crap ensues and I havn't heard Huckabee mention to much religious stuff during the debates. I just wanted to get a feel for it.....and I don't see how a ex-minister giving a sermon at a non-political event is bad either....

As for Paul, I like some of his ideas. My brother has his doctorate in Political Science and is a huge supporter of his. I just can't do it. A lot of the time he just seems like he's spacing out and rambling. I think he would make a great advisor, maybe even VP, but not the head of a country for me.
