I've read his 'Moment of Truth' recently released. This article is essentially a condensation of that book.

I agree the whole point of the surge was to prolong the occupation. Supporters of the occupation regardless of how successful the surge was will support a longer occupation.

The surge, didn't work there would be calls for a longer surge or more of a surge.
Now the surge has worked so well we should continue "surging"
