Mock Saints draft by Duncan (1 Viewer)

I don't about a lot of you but I don't believe there's a franchise QB in this years draft. At least not one I'd use a top 3-4 rd pick on with the help we need on defense, that being said and I know I'll get some red thumbs but is my thoughts. I would take a 7th rd flyer on Chad Kelly maybe Drew and Payton can help him. We know what he did in the 1 1/2 he played at Ole Miss against some of the best defenses. He played 22 game averaged 2.3 Tds, 309 yds, less than 1 pick, 64 comp. percentage and rushed for 38 yds and game.

We do need a young quarterback, but this is not a good draft year at the position.

I believe we should wait another year, give time for Grayson to either take the backup job or leave.

P.S. I still think that the new saints quarterback is now on Tampa's roster, in either Glennon or Ryan Griffin.

Not a bad effort. And he could be right about the first two picks. Judge the mock draft, not the writer.

1--Takkarist McKinley, LB/DE, USA
2--Patrick Mahomes, QB, Texas Tech
3--Fabian Moreau CB, USA
4--Adam Shareen, TE, Ashland
6--Jalen Reeves-Maybin, LB, Tenn
7--Corey Levin, OL, Chattanooga

Lame.

I'll be ecstatic if they pick McKinley. I know he would get plenty of playing time. Onyemata was supposedly a project and he got plenty of snaps. I have no doubt they would use him year one and he is a freak athlete. Still, my hope is Thomas and expectation is Barnett.

Why isn't Duncan a banned word, like neworleansprofootball.com used to be?

2nd is too high for a QB right now... Unless of course SP really really really likes the guy. Grayson was a shot in the dark. He may even work out eventually, who knows. But if we took Mahomes, I'd be okay with it simply for the fact that it isn't a must and it's barely a need.. So if we took in that high, I'd feel like we used the draft to go get our guy... the one we wanted, not the one that fell to us, and not another shot in the dark.

I like the Maybin pick, the 6th round is a stretch though. Out of all the tight ends, I like Engram... alot. Tak will be a very good pro. Just don't think he's worth the 11th pick, and I don't think he's a 3 down DE, which I'd rather than another 3rd down specialist. Of course the combine might change everybody's perspective on... well everybody.

Is Shaheen on that Sharpe/Gates athleticism level though? I only watched a brief clip, but he looks much more stiff and robotic. He has getaway speed, but I'd assume from watching that he doesn't have the A+ athleticism that those two or Jimmy Graham had.

Maybe not but he still looks like a decent starting caliber player like Todd Heap or Heath Miller used to be. He reminds me of a player who's career was cut short by injury, Brad Cottam.

We will find out how athletic he is at the combine.

Pat Mahomes has talent, but I think he's a reach above the 4th or 5th round, and the Saints are not just a new 2nd round QB away from taking the next step.

I would like to see Luke McCown upgraded, but the Saints seem fine with Luke, and upgrading him should never be at the expense of another top 3 tround pick like Grayson. Unless something changes, Loomis and Payton failed on Grayson, and they don't have credibility and capital anymore to reach high for another QB - at this moment.

Mahomes will have a flashy highlight video, but so would you and I if we were playing in the Mike Leach coaching tree Air Raid offense, which almost always is for a team with a defenseless defense, and playing against poor defenses.

You look at Big XII Mahomes' 2016 game stats and it's difficult to see that translating to the pro level. There are even some stinkers in it. He's a runner too which is enticing, until you see that he played half the season with an injured AC joint in his throwing shoulder, and, he had wrist surgery on his non-throwing arm after the season.

Patrick Mahomes II Stats, News, Videos, Pictures, Bio - Texas Tech Red Raiders - ESPN

You look at the Big XII QB's in the NFL, and not one of them (there are about 10) is an impact player. It's a list headlined by RGKnee, or Bradford, who scares nobody. I won't even include TCU's Andy Dalton, because he was never a Fun'n'Gun passer.

Mahomes is very nice, talented QB. But not at the expense of adding a defensive piece or an offensive lineman in the draft, regardless of what happens in free agency.

Kliff Kingsbury
Graham Harrell
Seth Dodge

The list goes on with the red raider shotgun attack.

I also dont see him translating well

Michael Roberts was the tight end that I misnamed earlier. Great frame for a redzone target with 16tds coming in 16' alone. He looks to have good box out ability and YAC despite a lack of speed. Im guessing that he runs a 4.8. He's not the blocker that Howard, NJokwu and Shaheen are but he looks like a good redzone target like Graham.

Leggett reminds me of old Texas Longhorn tes like Jermichael Finley or David Thomas, while a player like Howard is more similar to Jeremy Shockey because of his blocking.

Unfortunately, I think Mahomes will be gone before the Saints 2nd round pick. He looks like a future star to me and with Brees as his mentor, Saints would be set at QB for many more years.

I dont hate Mahomes. I can totally see the potential in him. I can imagine him being pretty good i few years. But to take him that high would he a horrible move. Any year, other than this one, Mahomes is day 3 project w/huge upside. Matter of fact, every QB in this draft is a project player. I think day 3 is where the value for these come into play. If we grab a QB before then, that would be a straight luxury pick, just like when we drafted Grayson.
