These kind of things intrigue me. Imagine the future of space travel could come down to production and maintenance of mold layers.


Geiger counters then measured radiation levels beneath the dishes every 110 seconds for 30 days. The results showed that radiation levels decreased at the height of the mold's growth: The counters measured a 2.4% decrease in average radiation levels beneath the mold-covered sides.

Yes, it mentions they believe a launch for a mars missions could start with just a microscopic amount of the mold to reduce weight. They estimate it needs to be cultivated to 21 cm thick and surrounding the entire environment as the petri dishes didn't stop enough radiation. IDK if that kind of space would be available on a ship, but certainly if you are going to build on the moon or mars, you'd want to get that going around your shelter.
 
So how long will it be before I can get a Space Moldachito at Taco Bell?
