Rushing YPG the saints D have given up in 09'.
Ding, ding, ding!

If you are up by 20 on everybody they don't run. Kinda a misleading number. It is still cool.

The Moose
That was my initial thought until I saw that the defense allowed 117 rushing ypg last season when the offense was just as productive, if not more so. Just as telling is the 3.2 ypc the defense allows on 63 rushing attempts which is 6th in the NFL. Last season, the defense allowed 4.2 ypc on 58 rushing attempts by opposing offenses.

My next thought was the quality of the opponent, so I took a look at the teams we played. The Bills are ranked 9th in the NFL in rushing offense (132 ypg), The Eagles are 12th (117 ypg) and the Lions 19th (a respectable 109 ypg) so it's not like the Saints are stuffing the rushing attack of teams who don't have a rushing attack. I give complete credit to Sedrick Ellis, Jon Vilma and Roman Harper who have almost completely taken away the middle of the field. We've always been solid on the edges. The DE's were always good in the rushing defense, even when they couldn't rush a passer to save their lives. The CB's have always been above average tacklers, dating all the way back to Fred Thomas.

I think we might actually have a defense that can stop the run...

To add a little perspective to the YPG number:

The Saints are also #5 (correction: #6) in yards per carry, at 3.2 yards per carry against. Saints opponents are averaging 21 rushing attempts per game, which is in fact one of the lowest in the league. However, YPC is a stat that should not be artificially low because the Saints were ahead, in fact arguably the opposite - any late game rushing attempts by opponents are likely to be against a soft pass-oriented prevent defense, things like draws and the like, where the defense really doesn't care if the runner gains 5-10 yards.

As for the Jets, their opponents are also averaging 21 rushing attempts per game, at 3.9 yards per carry.

Where is the jets amazing D?
The strength of their defense is in the passing defense where opposing QB's have completed only 47.9% of their passes against the Jets. You don't see a lot of sacks by the Jets (yet), but they confuse the hell out of the poor fella and take the receivers away from the QB to which Tom Brady can attest. The QB's don't get sacked, but the DB's lock down the receivers so well that the QB ends up throwing the ball away, hence the low completion rate. They do a solid job of stopping the run, surrendering 3.9 ypc and near the goalline, they refuse to budge holding opponents to an average of 11 ppg.

This is going to be a great game. The Jets look like the Saints of 1992 with a solid defense that's going to keep the score low so the offense doesn't have to work as hard. I know that the Jets fans think that Revis is going to lock down Colston (he's not), but even if he does who's going to cover Meachem, Devery, Shockey, Thomas, Bush, etc. in the passing game? The Saints have used 10 players to catch the ball so far this year. If they take Colston away, Devery ends up with the catches. If they take Devery away, Bush picks up the slack.

One of the most impressive things about the win over Buffalo is the way the offense changed the gameplan at halftime. It's as if Payton told Dick Jauron, "You want to drop back five DB's on every down and take away the passing game? Fine. We'll shove the ball down your throat."

This ^ :plus-un2: ... And Payton will do the same thing to Ryan, if necessary.

More importantly, Sanchez has yet to experience what he'll see Sunday. If GW unleashes his D with 37 blitzes again like he did to Edwards (60% of the Bills' offensive plays), Sanchez will commit turnovers.

That still doesn't factor in the Saints' twelfth man (our crowd). I really believe it's going to be a long day for Sanchez.

the jets are top 10 in every category and top 5 in most
total defense 3rd
rushing defense 9th
pass defense 5th
scoring defense 2nd
rushing YPA allowed 9th
rushing TDs allowed 4th
passing TDs allowed 2nd
passing YPA allowed 1st
opposing QB rating allowed 2nd

I feel certain that's the average time of possession.......heh
