Idiot should have turned and ran the other way as soon as he saw the cub in the road instead of approaching it trying to catch it on video. He is extremely lucky.
I’ve fished/hiked and upland bird hunted for 45 years. I’ve encountered many black bears, one grizzly and a mountain lion (that had thankfully just taken down a antelope on the upper Ruby valley in MT). In all cases the animals, as soon as they were aware of my presence, took off in the other direction, maybe I’ve been lucky, but it supports the notion that animals rarely attack.
That said, thinking a gun is going to protect you is foolishness. Most folks aren’t going to hit a animal moving at 30-40mph, bear/cougar spray is much much more effective....
And there are multiple instances of folks hitting the animal with a bullet but not bringing it down, guess what happens next.....
From what I've been told, it's only effective on Dancing Bears and Paedo Bears.
(Apologies to the late Captain Kangaroo)

It's not that you need to shoot them, the gun is just really loud and the sound can scare an animal off.

I also backpacked to Whitney Lake and Brady Lake near Redcliff this summer, and both were spectacular. Brady lake was a little bigger, and actually has a second lake right next to it (Sopris Lake), but it's easier to get to so there were more people. Whitney Lake was a straight up incline the whole way up, but it was spectacular once we got there, and just full of cutthroat trout.
Whitney Lake Trail
Please note the trail at the trailhead is very over grown and completely hidden from the road and might be hard to see. It’s on the right side as you drive down the dirt road. Be sure to stop and look well.www.alltrails.comBrady Lake Trail

I don't usually have to fend off those sort of Pandas, so I don't know...
